Integrated GPU stopped folding

Post by Demmers »

I fold using the AMD Ryzen 3400G CPU, and a couple of weeks ago, I decided to try using the integrated Vega 11 GPU (code gfx902). This worked great, effectively doubling the WU/PPD count. But a few days ago, it suddenly stopped getting any WU's. I get this in the logs, and wondered if there's a way to know whether this is due to no more approriate jobs (if what it says is literally true), or whether it's because the GPU has finally reached end of life with the folding project as a whole? I don't know whether to keep letting it continuously search for a project, or just turn it off.

Code: Select all

00:38:14:I1:WU229:Retry #46 in 8 mins 32 secs
00:46:46:I1:WU229:Requesting WU assignment for user Demmers team 76140
00:46:46:I1:OUT89:> POST https://assign1.foldingathome.org/api/assign HTTP/1.1
00:46:47:I1:OUT89:< HTTP/1.1 503 HTTP_SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE
00:46:47:E :OUT89:HTTP_SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE: {"error":"No appropriate assignment"}

Most likely they're simply isn't any work available for that species of GPU. As average GPU power keeps increasing the researchers can often use more powerful GPUs to accomplish the same work in less time

Due to limits in graphics cores often on board integrated gpus or best at folding smaller atom count projects. If they are available and sufficient quantity you might not get assignments. If they rank the species too high it reaches a point where integrated graphics will barely meet deadlines, or not make them at all.

There is really no harm in leaving it running if it's the only GPU you have. It will occasionally check for assignments and if you do get any it's just a bonus to your throughput. I folded around 50 million points or so on a 2400G using GPU alone.
Fold them if you get them!

Yes, Bob is right. No work available for such low end hardware. Normal these days

Thanks you two, I assumed as much, must have just been coincidental timing that there was an ongoing project at the time. I'm planning on building a new PC later this year, new modern hardware on the horizon :)
