Welcoming myself back....

Post by psaam0001 »

It has been a great while, since I have really done any folding.

But, life happens.... Including: 1) Unintentionally causing my primary folding systems to go offline (and out of commission); 2) Right shoulder joint replacement surgery; 3) The passing of my father nearly 1 month ago (at the age of 84).

So, now that I have updated my primary laptop to Fedora 41, I am looking forward to giving it a CPU stress test for a little while. Though I presume that the last Fedora ready client is v7.xx. Am I correct on this? If so, I will get that version and do what I can until I get new MB's and CPU's for my primary systems.

The last v7 client released is v7.6.21. There is a RPM installer available for download from - https://foldingathome.org/v7-client/. The main issue that you will run into is that the FAHControl app is written using Python 2.7, most recent Linux releases do not support use of that version of Python. I am not familiar with Python's support availability with Fedora to run this legacy version.

Someone did take the open source FAHControl code and rewrite it for Python 3. I would have to search back for its download location.

Current release version is v8.3.18. Currently there is no official RPM for use with Fedora, there exist instructions on how to create one on the F@h GitHub site. It is different from v7, if you do use it read the guide linked on the download page.

I have the 7.6.21 client installed okay. So, I am good for now.

I will wait for the RedHat/Fedora ready version 8.xx client to be released before I mess with FAHControl. By that time, I hope to have my Windows 10 systems back online. :-)

I am keeping my fingers crossed that my Socket AM4 based folding systems will be back online by March of 2025. As this laptop is not powerful enough to finish the newer work units within the time limit (it is an older AMD E2-9000e RADEON R2 APU).
