FAH was seeing/using new GT218 [GeForce 210] but no more

Post by VoiceCoil »

A couple of weeks ago I had to replace a GeForce GT610 card - which FAH appeared to recognize but would not use - in a Gentoo Linux machine because its fan was failing. I'm using Gentoo's maintained package for FAH.

I replaced it with a new GT218 [GeForce 210] and once I got the package manager to freeze on the correct version of the proprietary nVidia drivers I had X working and as a bonus, FAH not only detected the GT218 but actually started using it as shown on the internal web app. At some point recently, FAH neither recognizes nor uses the GT218. I reinstalled, re-configured (telling it yes to SMP and to GPU), and re-started and I can't get the GPU going again. Here's how the config file looks:

Code: Select all

<config>
  <!-- User Information -->
  <passkey v='<my_passkey>'/>
  <user v='<my_username>'/>

  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='0' type='CPU'/>
</config>
Here is the log:

Code: Select all

The only thing that has happened to this machine has been regular package updates and adding kernel modules for lmsensors. removed those two modules and tried FAH again; no change. Reinstalled nvidia-drivers pacakge; no change.

The GT 218 based cards, the GeForce 210 is only one of several dozen, are not supported for folding, and have not been supported for years. It is possible you either forced a configuration that did not actually fold on the 210 but on the CPU, or it picked up configuration info from the older GT 610 card that used to be installed.

The oldest cards that possibly could be used are the Fermi based cards. There the chip designation would need to be at least GF11n to work, the GF10n based cards are missing necessary hardware support. Better to look for a more modern GPU, at least Kepler based.

By default the client keeps the previous 16 log files. If you want, you can post one of those from when it appeared the GeForce 210 was folding.
