Intel Compute Stick announcement

Post by PS3EdOlkkola »

Has anyone seen this announcement by Intel at CES 2015, the Intel Compute Stick? http://www.extremetech.com/computing/19 ... p-computer

The Compute Stick runs on an HDMI port, so getting an HDMI hub and plugging in four of these (with external USB power to each Compute Stick) might make for a relatively cheap little FAH farm.

The Linux version is only $89, and it appears to use the Intel Atom Z3740, which is a 4-core CPU. I haven't found any performance data on that CPU running FAH; wondering if anyone has run, or is running this chip can give me an idea of PPD?

Check some benchmarks here. Not too promising. You can find related threads about folding on Atom processors, here, and here. Dated, but relevant.
Fold! It does a body good!™

When looking into ARK
Nothing for SSE, not sure if regular A3/A4 (A5 ;-) ) would run; but maybe still ok for NaCL ?
Looks like a nice alternative for some Rasberry PI users

They do have SSE. The latest atoms are full featured chips, OoO execution, etc.: "All models support: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4,[2] Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST), Intel 64, XD bit (an NX bit implementation), Intel Burst Performance Technology (BPT), Intel VT-x, AES-NI." (Wiki)

Now performance is another matter. I might pick one up for BOINC one day though.

BOINC, or ultra-low-end FAH.

I suppose it would be reasonable to compare it to the old Core2 Quad that's still running in the other room, but with a much lower power usage -- for anyone who wants to run just a CPU-based client. It's too bad that there's no supported GPU in it, but SoC is progressing rapidly. NaCl would probably run on it, too when it's not being used for something else.

It looks like a reasonable replacement for a Mac-Mini that's serving AppleTV.
