core 18 - too soon?
A lot of people have been telling me they wish core 18 had waited just a little longer. Of course I disagree, but some people need time to adjust to new things.
Yesterday I was at the laundromat, folding some protein-stained garments, when a little old lady approached me and said, "runpaint, you JUST got those new video cards and you would've finally earned a million points in one day. If you could have 24 hours of core 17, wouldn't life be grand?"
Well I just stared right in her ignorant old face, more wrinkled than the tattered t-shirt in my hands, and I set her straight about a thing or two. "Lady," I said, making the word an insult as I've seen it done on red pill forums, "Do you see these clothes? They all need folding. My work isn't done until I fold every one, and I take them as they come. These dryer rigs take the same 75 cents to finish a load, whether it's crammed full of towels or just a couple of washrags. Maybe things were different under Kaiser Wilhelm, and you only folded when it was convenient, but these days we take a bit more pride in our work. Besides, after core 15 is finished, there will be no more projects that support your vacuum tube GPUs anyway so your opinion doesn't matter."
She could only agree, as my argument was impenetrable, so we shared detergent and went back to my place for a quickie (1 NaCl work unit)

So that's where my Mom was yesterday. Explains why she felt frustrated and confused, mumbling, "'stats just not right".

Core 18 and Maxwell
I got my first core 18 WU (10473) a few hours ago on my GTX 970. It it very much in line with the core 15 units when it come to point (72k PPD) and around same as the core 17 when it comes to power draw (120W on top of a running system). If this is the future of Maxwell folding I'm not sure if I would recommend a friend to buy one for folding.
Couldn't you re-direct the core 17 9201 that is sent to my AMD´s to the Maxwells?

Re: core 18 - too soon?
Yeah, we bonded because we both sold our washing machines for 980s and have to use the laundromat now. And the washing machines were getting more ppd

Humor ? Did I sense humor ? Maybe because it's 4am in my morning and I can't sleep but still dream ...
But on a serious note: get Linux ... No core 15/16 ever hit me, I know its existence only of writings here in the forum, never seen one in my wash saloon. That's said, Core 18 I also never see because of Windows only.
But my 970 fold happily (the only available) 9201. My two 780s also 1300x or whatever comes along. If your rig is exclusive for folding and don't need high sophisticated overcclocking try Linux (right now I have better success with CentOS and kicked out Ubuntu).
Now I try to sleep back.

Re: Core 18 and Maxwell
Try Linux, no core15/16/18; only Core17 and 9201 all day for my 970. But out of pure egoism: don't try. When too many people try the supply might run dry for all of us.

Core18 will eventually be fixed and WUs will be distributed. What's not clear is when that might happen (and whether it will be with the current drivers or a future version).

They are distributed now bruce. Slower then core 15? I have turned off 8x maxwell.

Re: core 18 - too soon?
My GTX 980 (no flags set) got a P10473 yesterday. It ran for nearly 18h but at least with a power consumption comparable with core 0x17 - not as high as core 0x15.

Re: core 18 - too soon?
As I mentioned elsewhere before apart from the general PPD drop, the big problem is for people who pause/stop folding - given the QRB loss the PPD could get really low (to the point that I was considering switching back to my 670 card, but didn't

Re: core 18 - too soon?
Another option is AMD. I always run a couple of HD 7870s anyway (averaging 70 k PPD each), and have recently pressed my HD 7790s back into service (averaging 45k PPD) to make up for the unfortunate situation with GTX 750 Tis. You get only Core_17 with AMD cards, at least now that the Core_16s are finally gone (I think), and they are apparently immune to the 64-bit atomics bug (if that is what it is). It will be interesting to see how they do with Core_18 though.
Re: Core 18 and Maxwell
GTX 750 on a PCIEx1 slot, core 18 project 10471 = 22,000 ppd
core 18 project 10473 = 82,000 ppd
I prefer the latter. The tpf is half, but I'll keep watching to make sure these numbers stay the same on the faster project.
(all my core18 ppd before now have been consistent with the first one, about half of core17. 10473 is about twice core17.)

Re: Core 18 and Maxwell
Never mind, tpf tripled, ppd adjusted to 18,000
I also got a project 10472, it's currently getting less than 1/3 the points of core 17.
I don't understand why the newest core is less important and less valuable to the researchers.

That is an easy one to not understand because it is a false assumption.runpaint wrote: snip

Re: Core 18 and Maxwell
Good point. I guess the problem is that the Maxwell drivers aren't performing like they're supposed to, and when it's worked out then the points will go up.
Are other cards getting better numbers with core 18?
