You assume others have not turned off MS's autoupdate. I have had it done on many systems, just to see some update run manually quietly turn it back on for the future. MS has been very good at hiding this in many updates and patches for many years. About as bad as Google at re-enabling autoupdates to software.

There's a few ways to do it, initially MS got round them, but I haven't had to re-turn it off for ages. It's like Youtube trying to stop downloads. Ultimately the computer is in my possession and I can control it more.

pihole with blocking MS update website works for me perfectly

Been a year so I've forgotten, I just looked up a webpage and did all three suggestions. I think the one which works might have involved group policy editor. When I look at the update settings in the normal way, it says "your update settings are managed by your network manager". It's a computer not on a domain but it doesn't seem to realise.
