Homebrew macOS v8

Post by calxalot »

Those using homebrew on macOS can install the v8 beta using

Code: Select all

brew install --cask folding-at-home@beta
As normal, the install will fail if your default web browser is Safari and a known compatible browser is not in /Applications.

The four below are known to work with Web Control:

https://www.google.com/chrome
https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/
https://www.microsoft.com/edge/
https://brave.com

FAHControl and FAHViewer are removed as they are replaced in v8 by Web Control, which you open in a compatible browser (not Safari).

Web Control: https://beta.foldingathome.org/

A link for Web Control is installed as

Code: Select all

/Applications/Folding@home/[email protected]
If Safari is your default browser, you can right-click the link file and use Open With.

You should not use --zap if uninstalling v7 folding-at-home.

Hi! When I uninstalled `folding-at-home` and then installed `folding-at-home-beta`, I seem to have lost the FAHControl application.

Should I back out the beta cask, install the normal cask, and then additionally install the beta cask?

v8 does not have a FAHControl, all controls are through the web interface. There are two components, fah-client which runs in the background and the web control that uses a compatible browser.

If you also have remote v7 clients you want to control, you can reinstall just FAHControl and FAHViewer using the GUI v7 installer.

To prevent them from being deleted in the future, move the apps to somewhere else, such as an Applications folder in your home folder.

If you are using v7, please Finish all WUs before installing v8.
The new client will not pick up unfinished v7 WUs. They would be abandoned.

Not too late if WUs have not expired.
If you didn't zap, you can reinstall v7 and finish work.
Then reinstall v8.

The casks conflict with each other, so you need to uninstall one before you install the other.
Just don't zap.

Wondering if v8 can run on M1 or M2 cores natively?
Also, along the same lines, what about GPU support on Apple silicon?

Probably too much to ask at this time, and maybe not worth the effort—
though I’d love to get some GPU work out of this platform.

Thanks for all the hard work on keeping this project evolving.

Off topic, but...

Apple silicon - Yes
macOS GPU - No
Apple silicon GPU - bigger No
