7.6.13 Windows Client - Folding Priority oddity

Post by NRT_AntiKytherA »

I had my PC set to medium power and it was using 11 of the available threads from it's Ryzen 5 1600. Last night after the previous work unit had finished and paused I increased the folding power setting to full power in fahcontrol UI to see what difference if any was made. However, the WU for the CPU running this morning is reporting 9 threads and the client log below clearly states I have reduced the number of threads and not increased anything at all :e?:

Code: Select all

Obviously I won't interrupt it by reducing the setting to medium but I was wondering why setting Maximum would reduce the thread count rather than increasing it? The GPU is carrying on as normal but I am aware that the GPU is not affected by this slider passed Light folding, it is either folding or not.

Seems bizarre to me.

EDIT - especially as doing the same on the linux machine (AMD Athlon 5350) had the expected affect, it is folding with all 4 cores now and not the 3 it was using previously.

Please note that since you have an Nvidia GPU folding, you will need 1 CPU free to feed it if you're folding on the GPU.

Even though you have configured 11 CPUs, it will automatically be reduced to 10 CPUs since 11 is a prime number and the WU can't divide itself into smaller segments evenly (search for domain decomposition on this forum for additional information). Occasionally, 10 CPUs can cause issues but that's rather rare. The error would be the domain decomposition one.

To answer your question, Originally your CPU was asking for 11 CPUs WU and instead, got a 9 CPU WU to ensure that your CPU is folding a WU instead of sitting idle. Here's the message in your log file:
WARNING:WU00:FS00:AS lowered CPUs from 11 to 9

Once you have finished the WU, you might be able to get a WU for 10 CPUs lower.

That makes sense, but it should have stayed at 10 threads in that case. I never manually configured a value, I used the slider in fahcontrol. After double checking yesterday's log it was 10 threads on Medium Folding, not 11:

Re: 7.6.13 Windows Client - Folding Priority oddity

Post by PantherX »

This is how it works:
Full: Total CPUs - 1 CPU per GPU. In your case it would be 12 - 1 = 11 CPUs
Medium: (Total CPUs - 1) - 1 CPU per GPU. In your case it would be (12 - 1) - 1 = 10 CPUs
Light: (Total CPUs / 2) - 1 CPU per GPU. In your case it would be (12 / 2) -1 = 5 CPUs. However, 5 CPUs would be downgraded to 4 CPUs since 5 CPUs is a prime number so can run into domain decomposition issue.

Do note that some Projects can't fold on 10 CPUs so in that case, the WU assigned to the system will limit it to 9 CPUs. I am not sure if your current WU falls into that category of Projects or not.

Thanks for the clear and concise information, it's very much appreciated. I think I'll stick with medium on this machine going forward though as it is quite happy chugging away at that level. I've checked back through the older logs and cannot find the "AS lowered CPUs" warning anywhere else to date so if it is WU specific then it is the first my machine has encountered with it too.

EDIT - I don't see an option to properly mark threads as solved, @Moderators if you have the ability to do so please feel free. Otherwise I guess [SOLVED] has been turned off for a reason here and I could add it to the title of the top post to do the same.
