cumulative RAM usage increase
Mod note - moved topic to appropriate forum for client software issues
it appears that fah client causes my system to gradually increase RAM usage over time. it does not appear to be linked to msi afterburner or radeon software apps monitoring my gpus. nothing else running. requires rebooting every 2 days to reset. microsoft says malware or poorly written programs that don't release RAM usage back. recently had to start over after ssd failed. added 8gb RAM but after a day starting at 4gb it climbs to 7gb. please look into this.

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
Welcome to the FAH Forums cayenne187.
RAM usage can vary from WU to WU but tbh I can't remember seeing a post indicating any of the FAH software has a RAM leak before … Not saying you haven't got a real issue - I'm going to check the GitHub issues to see if I can find this ever reported before - but it may be something else (like malware) which you might not realise is running … I'll post back to confirm if I find anything.

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
There have been cases in the past of memory leaks (a number of years ago) - looks like they were linked with and caught at the beta software stages … Nothing current or recent that I can see has been reported … I'll let one of the more technical volunteers advise/guide you through checking if the leak is FAH related - If it is I am sure someone will help get it raised as an issue.

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
What version are you running? Older versions of fahcontrol had a memory leak but that was fixed. And is it fahclient or some other part that is using the memory?

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
it seems to be related to writing. every time the gpus pause and the cpu and ram spike to send data the result is an increase in RAM usage.

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
i am running newest 7.6.13
i just observed in real time the end of a wu and the ram dropped by 500mb as it started next. after 2 writes its back up to 6gb. i just got a big wu to monitor how much it goes up over time.

Is this a dedicated system?
What applications are installed on it?
What applications beside F@H is running on it?
What services are running?
What does Resource Monitor says about RAM usage?
Are all Windows updates installed on it?

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
I am aware that Chrome likes to consume RAM. Could it be possible that Chrome is left running in the background and with multiple Windows and tabs, could be using up your RAM.
In Resource Monitor, look at the top 10 processes that are using the RAM and monitor it. That will tell us what process is continuously using up the RAM and not freeing it up (memory leak).

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
I wonder if you can log the RAM usage... it will however, not show what process is accumulating it: https://www.instantfundas.com/2012/03/h ... -over.html
This is what the common and expected behavior is for F@H Software:
FAHClient should have very low RAM usage.
FAHControl should have low RAM usage.
FAHCoreWrapper should have very low RAM usage.
FAHCore_XX will have varying RAM usage. It may use up to 3 GBs of RAM depending on the WU assigned to it but once the WU has folded, it should release the RAM back.
In your case, you have 2 GPUs and assuming that they are given the largest GPU WU, that is 3 GB per GPU, that's 6 GBs of RAM in use.

Re: cumulative RAM usage increase
Free memory is not a good way to measure the memory used by an application.
I'm assuming you're using the the windows task manager. Click on the processes tab. You may have to use the View button to add specific columns but look at Working Set and/or Private Working Set. Personally I also like to see PF Delta because it tells you when there are page faults that temporarily allocate or deallocate of space in the Page File. Periodically, FAHCore_22 will allocate extra memory when it writes a checkpoint, but that's not the same as a gradual increase over time, like you seem to be talking about.
In my case, there's a fairly stable Working Set that increases or decreases somewhat depending on what stage of the calculation process happens to be active. Long term trends should be absent.
As far as free memory is concerned, it's a single pool, managed by the operating system on behalf of all running programs. When any program needs more RAM, the OS will do two things. It will allocate space from free memory or it will move idle pages from RAM to virtual memory (in the page file on disk). Then if those pages are needed again, they'll either be read back into RAM or, if they're already there, simply activated. When any program writes data to the disk, it is first held in memory during the caching process so free memory can be consumed rather rapidly and held until the (relatively slow) disk drive can perform the actual storage process. Free memory is a list of pages that have not been used recently. Reductions in the free memory pool simply indicates that more pages are active and the OS is attempting to hold more in case it happens to be something that is needed again soon.
