Overclocked GPU Projects dropping with error. -- YES.

Hi,

Facing an issue with the GPU projects getting dropped with the error code: BAD_WORK_UNIT (114 = 0x72). Please see the log below. Is this a known issue? Is there something wrong on my end?

We need to see how your system is configured because 9/10 there is an error in either the drivers or the configuration. If you can restart the computer and then grab the beginning of the logfile in


%APPDATA\fahclient

the file is log.txt.

Just to let you know, I left my PC on overnight with only the GPU slot folding, and this morning it shows the status of the GPU slot as "Failed". All of the WUs it downloaded during the night had also failed.

config looks alright. Is the card running stock?

definitely install the latest client, it should help you get work and then if that work fails we can see more detail as to why. At the moment, all we can really see is that you'r enot getting assigned work which is a common problem I'm afraid.

I was not even aware that there was a new client. Downloaded and installed 7.6.13 earlier, and the GPU seems to be folding fine now. No errors so far :)

Yes, the card is running stock, and the config hasn't changed since I started folding at the beginning of March, so I was quite sure that the config wasn't the issue. Also, I am aware about the lack of WUs, so no complaints about that, just that the WUs which were getting assigned were dropping, and that seems to be fixed with the new client now.

So it completed a 13404 but dropped 13876, 14445, 14432

13404 is 58330 atoms,
13876 is 159142 atoms,
14445 is 216707 atoms,
14432 is 148633 atoms

Not saying there's enough evidence to be proof but your card successfully ran a small unit and failed on three largish ones. Can you try downclocking the card by 200MHz and just see whether that makes any difference.

I turned the GPU core clock down by 200Mhz, but it just dropped another project. Any other ideas mate?

you could try lowering the memory clock. but the fact that it works with some and not others suggests the software is set up ok.

the fact is that fah is tough self-checking compute software. that means that hardware that can do simple things (like games) may fail. It's like how back in the day we used to use Prime95 to test our overclocked cpus - if it could pass Prime95 then it was stable. if it couldn't, then it wasn't.

when fah is running, use something like afterburner to monitor the temperatures, voltages, etc. I've lost a fair number of cards to fah because it pushes them so much harder than any other kind of software.

the fact is that fah is tough self-checking compute software. that means that hardware that can do simple things (like games) may fail. It's like how back in the day we used to use Prime95 to test our overclocked cpus - if it could pass Prime95 then it was stable. if it couldn't, then it wasn't.

when fah is running, use something like afterburner to monitor the temperatures, voltages, etc. I've lost a fair number of cards to fah because it pushes them so much harder than any other kind of software.
I wouldn't lower the memory clock, as I don't think that has any bearing here. Yeah, I'm well versed with Prime95. The GPU equivalent test of Prime95 should be FurMark I guess, and I ran a GPU stress test on FurMark with absolutely no issues. Steady FPS & temperatures.

I keep CPUID HWMonitor open at all times when the FAH client is running, and keep checking on temps, voltages, clocks etc. There are no anomalies found. At full load on the GPU while its folding, the temperature does not cross 78C, which is nowhere close to the limit of my card, the voltage is stable and normal.

I would like to believe that my GPU is not failing. Looks like the powers that be just don't want me to be folding with my GPU, lol :P

Please note that just like how folding is more stressful than Prime95 on the CPU, folding on the GPU is more stressful than FurMark.

The suggestion to lower the memory frequencies was part of troubleshooting to eliminate all possibilities so see what else is left. It's a choice that you make :)

I've noticed that I have a small chance to get an error when I try to use the GPU while it's folding - games or even highres video playing or a lot of "heavy" tabs open at the same time.

FAH is significantly more stressful that FurMark or most anything else you might find. Remove all overclocking and let it run for a while and let us know what happens. There's a reason why FAH does not support overclocking. Our FAHCore is intentionally a benchmark exceeding other benchmarks.

After you demonstrate that your non-overclocked GPU is capable of running FAH WUs, you may consider increasing the shader clock rate very slightly. Don't bother to increase memory clocks. It just generates more heat and makes rather small increases in performance.
