Hardware configuration: Running exclusively Linux headless blades. All are dedicated crunching machines.
Location: SE Michigan, USA

No WUs available / Could not get an assignment

I supervise several Ubuntu Linux 18.04.03 LTS machines, most are CPU only, a very few are GPU machines

For some time now, I have been observing difficulty in receiving work units. I can reach the assignment
servers and get the FAH logo on my web browser. Rebooting the machine does not seem to help.

Some times it resolves itself, other times, it can be days on end. I have not seen any mention of
server issues in this forum. Sometimes identical machines sitting next to each other, one will get
work, the other sits idle.

I can see the client retrying to get work. The GPU machines will get work assigned to the GPU but
not the CPU.

Any advice on what am I might be missing?

Please post the beginning section of your log that shows the system info and folding configuration. That would help in figuring out what CPU WU's your system is requesting beyond that it is for 8 threads.

Include that segment of the logs from one or more of the machines that are getting assignments as well as the same segment from the one (?) that's not getting assignments. Be sure verbosity is set to the default value.

That is very odd. You mention that they're identical. Were they cloned from the same disk image? Was FAH already installed in that image? My wild guess is somehow the assignment server thinks the one machine is impersonating the other and refusing to assign work. If there is a unique identifier per machine, I would expect it to be in work/client.db. Try stopping FAHclient on the machine without work and rename client.db and client.db-journal. Then see what happens when you restart FAHclient.

The machines are not clones- each were bare metal installations running well over a year, the no work issue only developed in the last couple of months

What was the PRCG of the last WU completed before it went idle?

I suspect that the machines that are not being assigned have a history of dumping a lot of failed WUs -- sometimes because of something like a less that stable overclock. If that is, in fact, what happened, it's your own fault for not monitoring the system(s) and taking corrective action.

When the number of failed WUs becomes excessive, the machine eventually gets blacklisted -- as it's really bad for science.

Does removing client-type advanced from the slot configuration make any difference?

@Bruce, I am not seeing any evidence of DUMPED wu's, connectivity issues, or other problems, except for not being able to get work assignments.

For what it's worth, I monitor 17 different systems in five different locations across four states. They all seem to have CPU work assignment issues.

@r2w_ben, It does not seem to make any difference, I have some set as client-type advanced, and some with no client type setting
