iostream stream error: Access is denied.

Post by Ghetto_Child »

I don't know what the heck to do to fix this, I just installed this today and I've all day be running into problems that block the web and desktop interface from accessing any slots or even seeing slots.

Two points while we wait for real experts to show up.

1) Your log looks nothing like my log, have you messed with verbosity? That will hinder any help, I think normal is verbosity = 3.

2) Your path looks nothing like my path, did you use the default install? I would.

(@JimboPalmer: Yes, he is running with increased verbosity, making it more of a challenge to find the significant information needed to help him.)

@Ghetto_Child: Please re-post your log in accordance with the instructions in the sig block of this post.

How are you starting FAH? It's intended to be run by the userid who installed the software with no special permissions. You should be using the scripts that are created at install time.

I don't recommend making changes to the configuration before you get it running the first time. A fresh clean install is probably a good idea.

I will read the log posting rules and repost in accordance a later.

I set verbosity to 4 or 5 because I was trying to troubleshoot what could be wrong.
I used custom settings for install but left all values at default except for the "manual startup" and the "screensaver" options enabled.
I've tried reinstall preserve data, reinstall erase data, and even reboot after each un/install.
The current windows login is the only login on this PC. I usually launch the FAHControl from the windows desktop shortcut. I only used the Chrome app to take a look at the interface and to troubleshoot these problems.
It ran the first time I installed but as soon as I tried to remove the CPU folding slot and keep just the GPU folding slot; that's when the FAHControl would no longer display clients/slots and would not allow me to add new slots.
I found out through my troubleshooting attempts that going into the folder inside Program Files (x86) and running FAHClient.exe actually made some slots show up in the FAHControl; but no matter what. Launching FAHControl never starts any slots.
Only running FAHClient.exe launches slots. I don't know how to get FAHControl to launch the slots.
Using the Web Control results in and endless loop of the interface attempting to load but no ID or WU credits ever receiving. I also get different results visiting nacl.foldingathome.org vs client.foldingathome.org and absolutely none of those sites and not even the forum login page works securely with https. Chrome says all sites are insecure and should not be used with sensitive info or passwords etc.

I just did a reinstall again:

I have a feeling I run into/do this all the time but I definately don't grasp how to manually launch work slots. There should be a shortcut for this instead of reboot.

Apparently (maybe I'm wrong) you're starting FAHClient by clicking on the program rather than using the shortcut provided. Starting manually means you MUST find that shortcut. Something was running because it downloaded the required FAHCore_21 (for your GPU) and FAHCore_A7 (for your CPU) -- but the permissions problem needs to be diagnosed and I'm guessing you've got it started in the wrong environment.

Presumably you're running Windows10, though that's not required.

NaCl runs inside of Chrome, so it's in a captive environment that has nothing to do with FAHClient/FAHControl.

NaCl does use the CPU (only) so it's not expected to be used if you have a CPU slot -- since they'll compete for the same resources, reducing the effectiveness of both somewhat.

Open the directory %APPDATA%\FAHClient and post the first part of log.txt,

I'm using Windows 7. FAHClient data folder is inside the profile Roaming folder.
Maybe my mistake was always chosing Manual/Custom instead of Express install but I wanted to be able to manually start folding so that it doesn't start everytime I reboot.
Currently when I launch a shortcut for the client with the "Start In" value set to the data directory, it launches a dedicated Command Prompt window but if I close that window all the slots disappear from the FAHControl interface. Is the only way to have everything contained in FAHControl interface to install with the automatic startup option?
There was a moment when the Chrome web client (I think NOT the NACL version) was showing both the CPU & GPU but now it just never loads and constantly attempts to get WU points saved in user id profile.

Re: iostream stream error: Access is denied.

1) I recommend you let FAHClient start automatically at boot-time. Then enter FAHControl and Pause (or Finish) any slot that you don't want to run at that time. There's even a setting for pause-on-start=true. FAHClient is intended to run as a service -- like the printer service that sends queued data to your printer. If you don't want your printer to be making noise, you can (A)avoid printing anything new from your browser or office-like application and/or pause your print queue. If something was partially printed when you reboot, it should probably still be sent to your printer. Manage the printer from Control-Panel + Devices and Printers rather than figuring out how to stop or start the background printer streaming component of the OS.

B) Use the shortcut to start FAHClient; don't start it the way you've been doing it. If it's not started correctly, you'll see the output and that window has to stay open.

C) Letting a CPU slot run continuously doesn't cause screen-lag since the background processing is managed by the OS. A GPU slot may or may not cause screen-lag which can be very annoying. (I recommend you try idle=true)

When I'm doing frequent reboots and tests having FAH automatically start at login slows everything down and interferes with EVERYONE's troubleshooting instructions. Microsoft, Eset, anyone with software that I have to ask for troubleshooting help will always tell me to turn off or remove non-essential startup apps. Hence why I need manual control for now. Also the way Eset scans thouroughly, it is faster to launch FAH manually after Eset completes startup scanning and I've had a chance to disable Eset's real-time scan for the session.

As for the cpu slot, I don't want it at all but when I tried to remove it and make the GPU slot become slot 0; all slots stopped fuctioning and became inaccessible. At least until I manually double-clicked on FAHClient.exe

To follow your recommendation 1B, I have to reinstall to get that. Currently slots only run if I double-click the FAHClient.exe or the FAHClient.exe shortcut I created with the "Start in" property set to %APPDATA%\FAHClient. Is there no command line switch or shortcut property that can make the FAHClient.exe output only appear inside the FAHControl log tab. It is currently displaying the output in both the log tab and that command prompt window, both update at the same time.

As for recommendation 1C, I don't want CPU folding at all because my CPU is doing other tasks I prefer. Setting GPU folding to idle completely turns it off so I'm required to set it medium or higher.

Do you still need me to reinstall with the automatic startup option?

Well, the first problem was you were starting FAHClient with the output being displayed in a Window --- which must not be closed --- so the script that hides the output would have prevented you from closing that window (and killing FAHClient) Presumably you've corrected that problem by using the shortcut that contains the hidleconsolee.exe problem.

The second problem probably happened when you decuded to renumber slot 1 to be a replacement for the CPU slot 0 after yoy removed it. Removing the CPU slot (as disabling it from starting WUs) would have been a reasonable step, You could have left the GPU in slot as slot 1 or you could have removed all slots, and then re-added a GPU slot but you would have needed to do that in two distinct steps.

Personally, I would have configured the remaining slot(s) to pause-on-start, allowing FAHClient to initiazlie but to avoid starting the FAHCore(s). I don't think just starting FAHClient would have slowed down anything as long as no WU processing was started -- but I'd have to test that to confirm.

Is your GPU slot working the way you want it to?

The FAHClient.exe shortcut is what I created so HideConsole.exe is never run. This explains why I get that console and can't close it without stopping all slots from running. Is there a way to integrate that program into the shortcut I created; and how do I?

Yes it seems the whole program is incapable of changing work slot IDs. Maybe the work downloaded is bound to the slot ID at the time of download and does not change. Making CPU core data wind up sent to the GPU when I switched IDs. I can't remember if the slot simply froze or just disappeared from FAHControl interface that one time I tried.

I will try the pause-on-start option. Do I insert it into general expert area or add the flag into each slot core expert area?
The GPU was running when I launched FAHClient.exe from my shortcut. I wish GPUs could run on light or idle setting but that only makes it wait/pause until I raise it to medium non-idle settings. I have not done a re-install with default settings yet, I was waiting for a response to confirm if that is the best next step to try towards my ideal config (manual client launch with output contained in FAHControl and functioning Web Control too). Should I proceed with re-install to automatic client startup now or is there other steps you'd like me to try at this point?

Side note, is it normal that a GTX 770 is detected as Fermi core by FAH? I thought this card was a Kepler core.

You can either add this to an individual folding slot, then the option only applies to that slot. Or you can enter it in the Expert area, then the pause will apply to all slots.

Yes, that is normal. The transition from the Tesla and earlier GPU architectures used by nVidia to Fermi is a dividing point in processing abilities that is important in terms of folding. Fermi and later have the needed software, driver and hardware features supported that are needed for processing FAH GPU WU's currently. Tesla and earlier do not, and folding projects for them finished several years ago.

So far everything later than Fermi has a common folding code. At some future time there may come a different GPU architecture from nVidia that will require separate coding from the current ones, then there will need to be a new designation. FOr now though, Fermi is shorthand for "Fermi and later".

I reinstalled, and now I'm even more puzzled. Apparently the ONLY difference between the settings I had and what I have now is a single shortcut planted in the start menu startup folder; which launches the client without a command prompt window. However the properties of it are identical to the shortcut I manually created for FAHClient.exe to start in %APPDATA%\FAHClient. Yet even now, after quiting from the system tray icon, then clicking the startup folder item, launches the slots correctly; but clicking the shortcut I created manually in %APPDATA%\FAHClient lauches that command prompt window that must stay open for the slots to keep working. The only diff I can see between the two shortcuts is mine has an additional item on the Security tab for permissions to the "Users" group.

So what's making one shortcut function and the other shortcut behave so different?

Oh yeah, the web client/web control is still not functional. It's stuck in a data/profile retrieval loop it seems.

You apparently got the "Start in" correct in the shortcut you built -- but forgot that there are two programs. The target of the shortcut created by FAH says "...hide-console ... FAHClient ...." which redirects the console output of the program that it starts so there's no output to a window.

FAHControl only works after FAHClient has been started and only if the inter-task messages are not blocked by a firewall program and if the files are in the expected "start_in" directory.

 thanks, I didn't look thoroughly enough at the Target field and didn't ever think there could be a preceding program.

Now to figure out why Web Control doesn't work anymore. I'm even puzzled how to diagnose it, I've tried erasing foldingathome.org cookies, enabling/disabling javascript, Incognito window vs normal window. None work anymore.

FAHControl or WebConrol should connect through what I call the telnet interface. Assuming you have telnet or a similar program on your system, the way I test it is to attempt to connect to it from the command line.
telnet 137.0.0.1 36330 should open a text window through the loopback adapter on 127.0.0.1 (i.e.-my own computer) on port 36330, That interface should be open unless you've modified the security settings in FAHClient or unless you have a firewall that blocks the connection -- assuming that FAHClient is running.
