Error uploading one workunit

I've had one work unit stuck unable to upload for almost two weeks now. I've been able to upload other work units since this one got stuck, but this one remains. It possibly got stuck because the router that I use was factory reset between the start and end of the work unit. Here's a copy of the log.

Welcome to the folding support forum.

One first step at diagnosing this would be to see if you can open the WS address in a browser - http://155.247.166.220:8080 and http://155.247.166.220:80. Do the same for 155.247.166.219 and report the results.

Port 80 is not open on either 155.247.166.220 or 155.247.166.219. The WU will need to upload through port 8080.
The client should always be attempting to upload to both ports -- except if you happen to be communicating through a proxy server.

I don't have enough information about those two servers to comment on port 8080 connections.

There's no record showing that project:8635 run:5 clone:1 gen:69 has already been received so FAH is still waiting for that result.
The previous GEN (P8635 R5 C1 G68) was added to the stats database on 2017-09-09 00:06:39 so the WU you have might have been assigned soon after that.

Hi and thank you.

I visited all of those IP addresses, and each time I was taken to a Google result for that IP.

I checked and discovered that I am using a proxy server that I haven't had for very long, though I've been able to upload other WUs before and since I got the proxy. I configured my internet settings to not use the proxy server and Net Limiter reported that my bandwidth was going through Chrome instead of the proxy, but I was still getting the same error within the F@H logs. Interestingly, I tried pasting those IP addresses into the address bar again and got a different error.

I also tried disabling my firewall and even added this PC's IP address to the DMZ, but no change to the error. I configured F@H to use the proxy server, and got a different error that included ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: 10001: Server responded: HTTP_TEMPORARY_REDIRECT. It's possible that I configured it wrong. It's also possible that none of these things was going to work anyway, but I thought that it was worth a try.

I used a open port checker tool to check 155.247.166.219 and .120. Ports 8080 were open on both while 80 were closed on both. I'm assuming that this means that the work and collection servers are fine, the problem is at my end. What's the next step to diagnose my problem? Thank you.

Edit: could it be that the client I'm using is three years old? Would simply updating to a new version solv my problem?

The ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT is because
1) You entered the IP address using the default port 80 rather than adding the suffix for port 8080
http://155.247.166.220:8080/ should work unless you are using a proxy.
2) Ordinarily either port would work since the server(s) are supposed to redirect Port 80 connections to their port 8080. Unfortunately this redirection is currently not working on those servers. so only port 8080 will work.
3) This is further influenced by the presence of a prosy server on your end.

A new version of the client will not change this behavior.

I tried both 80 and 8080, and got the same results. I also should mention that the proxy I referred to earlier is a virtual one, and I believe that F@H bypasses it anyway, so I doubt that that's causing the problem.

Did I mention that a factory reset was performed on my router while this unit was still folding? This is the only cause that I can think of.

Have you configured your security software give the same permissions to FAHClient as it does for standard browsers? (You might have to temporarily disable each component of your security software one-by-one to see which one might be causing your problem... not just the proxy.)

The only other active security feature that I have is Windows Firewall. The rest are passive. I have rules that allow fahclient.exe access to all ports anyway. I've been observing the work and collection server IPs through NetLimiter and my router's Connections page. Netlimiter shows fahclient.exe attempting to connect to both IPs on ports 80 and 8080, but the router reports only connections to ports 80 on both IPs.

Why would this Work Unit fail to upload when other Work Units before and since have uploaded fine?

Because port 80 is not open on that particular server; only port 8080.

The FAH-lab on that campus has been working with their network support people but are having trouble getting it resolved.

As far as I can tell, it's only a problem for clients that are behind a proxy. I'm not convinced that FAH is actually bypassing your proxy as you suggest.

The key messages are

155.247.166.220:8080 works from both my browser and from FAHClient.
155.247.166.220:80 fails from my browser for that particular server.

Your proxy appears to be intercepting connections from FAHClient to 155.247.166.220 on port 8080 and translating them into connections on port 80.

Thanks. I've just spent the past hour examining my settings and other things, and come to the same conclusion. I'm glad you've confirmed it for me. Looks like I need to solve things on my own, because I don't think you can really help me with my specific problem.

Just to confirm, though, I found that http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/ wouldn't work and http://assign.stanford.edu:80/ would. So all I need to check is the address ending with :8080 instead of waiting for my client to upload again?

Edit: What? I thought I edited this post last night, but it didn't edit?

Anyway, shortly after I last posted, I found a setting pre-configured into my router by my ISP that dropped almost all packets for port 8080. I disabled this rule and it worked instantly. I suspected that it was my router that was the problem, so I spent several hours yesterday morning trying to bypass it, but I failed because my ISP hides my own password from me, instead pre-configuring it into my router.

So, problem solved. Thanks again.

Sounds like the Submit didn't take for the edit, I have had that happen every so often.
