Low PPD on some WUs

Post by Bryman »

I keep getting WUs that only give me about 35,000 PPD (normally I get about 125,000) ...its happened three times in about a week
My gpu temp will go from about 80 to 62 and the usage will just get stuck at random numbers... first it got stuck at 36 then 26 and now it's stuck at 64... all in the same WU and the usage hasn't actually changed
I have the latest drivers but my video card is a little... glitchy
I've gotten "Forces are blowing up!" and "Smartpointer: Can't dereference a NULL pointer" and sometimes my drivers will crash and then they will recover and I'll start getting squares popping up on the screen
I ran DDU about a month ago to fix an issue with my drivers crashing every 30 seconds unless both discrete and integrated graphics were enabled and it fixed that issue but didn't fix the other issues

Also my CPU is running exactly 7-9% on the FahCore_21... normally it'll stay at about 1 and jump up to about 12 for a second every once in a while... but it won't just stay at 7-9% the whole time

I see no errors in the log prior to this happening

This is my video card usage over the past 40 minutes

My PPD is fluctuating from about 27,000 to 60,000 but normally I get about 125,000

Anything I might be able to try to fix this issue?

Code: Select all

Welcome to the folding support forum.

You appear to have edited out the section of your log file that shows the client configuration that would immediately follow the System information section, can you post that as well? Also, which specific driver version is "the latest drivers" that you have installed.

Other known causes for driver crashes include overheating, overclocking (including factory overclocks), and video driver installs that have not removed all of a previous version of driver. Those are the first things I can suggest checking on.

The PPD is now down to 14,000 when normally it's about 125,000 and video card temp is 53 when normally it's about 80...

It does have a factory overclock of about 3%... I would run it at stock but my video card won't let me underclock when running folding@home, it lets me underclock when running other programs but for some reason if I underclock with folding@home running it will just run with the factory overclocked speeds..

I could try increasing my video card voltage and see if that fixes the issue.... it's about .015 higher than when I started getting "Bad state detected" errors

My video card might be overheating... one of my video card fans doesn't run unless the fan speed is 80% or higher... so it makes the GPU chip cool but makes the rest of the card hot, like the VRMs and other parts of the card

My video card also doesn't power throttle if it's set to +20%... I was running OCCT and Corsair Link said that it was feeding about 460 watts to my video card and HWmonitor said about 410 watts were going into my video card

I got my VRM up to 135°C by keeping fan speed below 80% with 1.3 volts and my video card shut off (monitor went blank and computer stayed on but did not restart, had to hold down power button)

Normally my GPU temp is about 80 and VRM temp about 100... the VRM temp is a little high because one of my video card fans doesn't run unless fan speed is 80% or higher, and I keep it at 40%

As I'm typing this my PPD is back up to 36,000.. still way lower than normal

Someone else may have further suggestions, but it does appear that your GPU is overheating under load and then throttling. Core_21 does load GPU's higher than previous folding cores.

We do suggest that the login verbosity be left at its default of 3. Higher levels very rarely provide any useful information, and do get in the way of troubleshooting a configuration and any related problems.

I also seem to have gotten 16:47:29:WU02:FS00:Server responded WORK_QUIT (404)
16:47:29:WARNING:WU02:FS00:Server did not like results, dumping

two times on my desktop and once on my laptop.. I think there's a bad server..

It happened twice on a server that it uploaded to 171.64.65.99

It appears that server is not liking the WUs

My gpu is not throttling due to temps... it's been ~60° for over 5 hours now and it allows itself to go up to 97 before throttling... the max temp it hit was about 85, I think it was about 80 at the time this happened though

The core and memory clocks aren't decreasing.. the load is just very low for some reason

The owner of 171.64.65.99 has been contacted and is investigating if there's something wrong there. If that applies to you, please discuss it here: Server 171.64.65.99 Dumping WUs

You're currently in a topic discussing low PPD and they're not the same issue.

Artefacts on screen are a sign of data corruption, most probably from overheating of the video ram or GPU. The overheating can be from overvolting, increasing the power limit, overclocking, or simply inadequate cooling

Yeah, "Forces are blowing up!" and "Smartpointer: Can't dereference a NULL pointer" and squares popping up on the screen are vram issues

I only got the "Forces are blowing up!" and "Can't dereference a NULL pointer" once... but I've gotten the squares popping up on the screen multiple times... one time because I increased the memory clock from 1425 to 1850 but a few times its happened at stock

I know overclocking the vram from stock gives no benefit whatsoever with folding

I probably just have bad vram (or maybe it's overheating, idk) but I'm not sure why some WUs only give about 1/4 the PPD... I don't think that's normal

I'm getting 130,000 PPD now that I have a new WU... but this has happened three times

This is it now with the 130,000 PPD http://i.imgur.com/TvDjNkZ.png

And this is it with the ~30,000 PPD http://i.imgur.com/73ptfPv.png

You could easily have caused permenant damage to the vram running at 1850. Maybe there are memory errors causing the GPU to stall randomly. The WU's vary a lot in size, maybe that explains why it comes and goes with different WU's

Caused permanent damage by running the vram at 1850? I only ran it at that speed for about 30 seconds and then squares starting popping up on my screen so I turned it down and it didn't fix the issue and about 5min later my computer restarted... but the memory resets itself so I don't see how I could of caused permanent damage

Although I have set my ram voltage to 1.7 a few times just for a few minutes... could of gotten my vram up to dangerous temps, unfortunately my video card does not seem to have vram temps... only gpu and vrm

My video card is pretty messed up... no power throttling at +20%... Corsair Link said that PCIe#1 (my video card) was at 38 amps (460 watts)

Apparently the rated amount for 2 8pin plugs is 300 watts... It was at 460 :S

Only one fan runs unless fan speed is 80% or higher... video card randomly crashes about once every 2 days... (my computer randomly restarts itself.. I believe it's my video card causing this) memory appears to be damaged... won't let me underclock if folding@home is running... I'll set the core clock to 800 and memory to 1200 and if I don't have folding@home running it'll work... but once I start folding@home it sets itself to 950mhz core 1425mhz memory... I can overclock it when folding@home is running but it won't let me underclock it

Time for a new video card, I guess

*sigh*

I was looking at getting a 980 TI but then decided I should probably wait until the new ones come out... hopefully my video card will last until then

I'm not getting a ton of errors with folding@home.. I used to get a bunch of "bad state detected" errors but once I increased the voltage I no longer got those

It happened again...

Image

This is the video card usage

It went down to about 55°C... that's when it was at 15,000 PPD and now it's at 50,000 PPD and the video card is about 65°C but normally it's 125,000-150,000 and the video card is 80°C

Image

Also the ETA for this WU is only about 5 hours total... that's really short for a video card WU... especially if it's only working at about 1/3 the pace

Usually the ETA for GPU WUs is about 8 hours

Now it's at 30,000 PPD and video card is 60°C

Now it's at 67,000 PPD and video card is 67°C

Now it's at 32,000 PPD and video card is 61°C...

Now it's at 50,000 and video card is at 65°C again...

Is it supposed to be this low and fluctuating this much?

I know the PPD varies from WU to WU but I'm getting on average about 40,000 PPD and normally I get 125,000-150,000... that just seems kind of drastic... especially since my video card is only working like 25%

The 38amp draw you're seeing is at the core voltage, not the 12v being supplied to the card.

There's an amp or 2 inaccuracy somewhere, I had the memory overclocked more on the screenshot of the Corsair Link one... So really HWmonitor would be about 410 if you added up the core and memory wattage and if I had the memory overclocked more

I say there's a little inaccuracy somewhere because the 12 volt is only going from 11.8 to 11.2 on my video card... So that would be about a 20 watt drop so I'm not sure where the other 30 watts would go...

Not sure how accurate the voltage is though... The voltage coming out of my power supply is 12.06 at idle and about 12.02 with 500 watts of load... The voltage shouldn't drop from 12.06 to 11.8 with the video card only consuming 10 watts or so at idle

Also the numbers in Corsair Link are a little off if you add them up

12.03 x 44 does not equal 476

Oh, and the reason it says 64% GPU utilization is because the GPU was JUST starting to throttle when I took the screenshot... it's weird... if I'm consuming less than about 15 amps then it throttles at 97°C... otherwise it starts throttling at 90°C

If it didn't throttle the GPU temp would be at least 105-110°C with the side of my computer case off and fans at 100%... I guess 1.3 volts and 400+ watts heats up the card a lot... heh

I guess the TDP is 250...

You cannot draw these conclusions. Various projects are absolutely NOT the same. A project with a large number of atoms will generally take much longer that a project with fewer atoms. (There are other factors, too, so it's not always true.)

The question is how many hours did THIS PROJECT take the last time you ran it ... and how long does it take others running the same project who have identical GPUs with similar clock settings?

Does this WU have shorter deadlines that whatever other project you're comparing it to? (There's no linear relationship, but certainly there's some kind of correlation.)

See all the GPU projects on the psummary page and compare the associated data given there. Projects 9852 has final deadline of 20 days, whereas project 10495 has a final deadline of 3 days. (Final deadlines are aimed at the slowest GPUs, not the fastest, so you can expect to beat them by a significant amount, but it's the range that I'm pointing out.) That corresponds to atom counts of 126753 and 67842.

Well... PPD is back down to ~15,000

The one I'm folding right now only has a base credit of 2,700... the one I did a few days ago had a base credit of 10,400

Image

Unfortunately I do not seem to have a screenshot of this same project... or any other projects I took a screenshot of that had this same low PPD... but maybe I can find it in the logs or something
