GPU Nvidia

Post by OffRoadGear »

I have been folding for years on several machines, but for the last few months I have been having trouble getting my GPU to fold. It wont download new work units and im not sure what to do. I have searched the forums and played with the settings but nothing seems to work. I also tried uninstalling and that did not help. My computer processor doesn't do much compared to what my GPU is capable of on this machine so I would like to get this fixed ASAP.

If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Here is a copy/paste of the log. If any other information is needed just let me know.

Since the GeForce 8800 GT is a pre-Fermi card, you are out of luck.
They are no longer supplying work for it.

Welcome to the folding support forum, OffRoadGear.

Unfortunately, Core 11 end of life was announced more than a year ago. Aug 2013
http://folding.typepad.com/news/2013/08 ... ore78.html
Coming to a final halt very recently. Sept 2014
https://folding.stanford.edu/home/fahco ... d-of-life/

Folding for multi-cored CPU continues. Single core CPUs, not so much. Sorry, the obsolescence wheel grinds on...

I don't really use this computer much anymore. Its old but I keep it on to fold and other random things. The kids use it, I use it to run my vinyl cutter, that kind of stuff.

Should I drop a newer card in it to keep my folding more productive? With just the CPU, the control panel shows i'm doing only about 375 points per day hahaha. If I can pick up a card for not a lot of $ that will improve my folding, I will do so.

Any recommendations?

I have 2 other rigs going with no problems, I just hate to see this one sit here doing nearly nothing.

If you find something like GTX 660Ti it brings you around 60kPPD ... Good use of older hardware. Just have a look after ther power supply. Or 7xx ... And check on what slots, PCIe 2.x or better

Get a GTX 750 Ti. It is very efficient, and will do about 65k PPD at the moment on core 17. That may go down a bit on core 18, but the Maxwell architecture is the wave of the future, so there could be more optimizations for it later.

Was just looking at new cards. Wow.... Things change so fast. Didn't realize how far out of date my 8800 GT was. Not even sure this old computer is worth turning on anymore haha.

If it has a PCIe 2.0 slot, upgrading the GPU is the best way to extend the folding life of that computer.

This 750Ti is probably the best bang/buck right now (on Newegg.) Use driver 327.23 and enjoy some serious folding :)

LOL! You been out of the loop for a very long time
Get a GTX 970 and a 550w PSU and just fold on that. IMO CPU folding is a waste of power unless you 4P folding with 16+ cores

70000ppp/$130 = 538 ppd/$

On a 970

248000/$350 = 708 ppd/$

So the 970 is a better value if you can get the card...and if WU continue to be available.

Of course this price analysis does not include the cost of electricity to power the GPU's. With a TDP of 145 W for the 970 vs. the 60 W for the 750ti, depending on the price of power in your area the difference can add up over a year's time.
