First post be gentle :)
Hey guys
Ok I haven't used the forums yet, I have been folding for a little while now, but this doesn't seem to be going right so I wanted to check in here and see if anyones got any ideas
My CPU is an Intel i7 4770k and my graphics card is a Radeon HD 7900 series
The GFX Card seems to be ok with the work units, I am clocking up estimated points of some 27000
The CPU on the other hand seems to be nowhere NEAR that mark
It says on the web control page where it says RUNNING on the CPU Tab "CPU 7"
I have no idea whether this is using more cores, its a top end processor so I am very disappointed its not seeming to do the work
I thought it would kick the GFX Card figures into touch but apparently not
I do not have a great deal of expertise so when I installed FAH I did it on EXPRESS
If anyones able to help me it would be very appreciated, I fold for at least 6 hours a day, but it would be good to get the maximum out of it and currently it just isnt performing as it should
Best wishes
Chris

Will do as soon as I get home tonight thank you
Re: First post be gentle :)
We'll know more when you provide that information, but your expectations are a bit high. There's no easy way to compare a quad-core CPU to a GPU with 1500 to 2000 unified shaders. Your CPU will do useful work but they don't earn points that compare to what your GPU will do.
In the early days of FAH, the CPU was the workhorse and a lot was accomplished in those days, but when GPUs were added to the mix, science was able to progress more rapidly. That didn't reduce the value of the CPU work, but it raised everybody's expectations.

Hey guys
Sorry for the delay had things to do
Ok, firstly, a couple of screenies of the information you need, then the log file
Maybe my expectation of the CPU is too high, probably because I do not fully understand how it works, and because I have an i7 CPU which I thought was probably at the time the best that money could buy it would be capable of racking up some decent points but maybe not
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know

Re: First post be gentle :)
Earlier, did you configure your CPU into a whole bunch of slots (one per core?), then removed all but one slot? It is the only explanation that I can think of that would produce 5 uni-processor WU's just sitting in the work queue waiting for the CPU to get to them.
The CPU slot will not produce much PPD, till those WU's are cleared out. You have a bunch of single-core WU's that will only use one core of the eight possible. Once they go away, the client should fetch a multi-core WU and your CPU PPD should improve markedly.
Other than that, your config looks fine.

Yeah I did config the CPU for that as I thought I was doing it wrong, so where do I go from here what do I need to do to remove those extra units of work?

Re: First post be gentle :)
No need to remove them. By my calculations, all those WU's should finish before their deadlines as long as you run 24x7. The CPU will work on one at a time till they are all gone then the client will get a new WU that will work much better.

Re: First post be gentle :)
Adding the setting "-NT 7" as an "extra-core-arg" will help you rip through those WUs faster. Remove when done. See the Windows Install Guide on the fah web site, under Customizing Slots.

The projects listed as queued up on your client were not released to run on 7 threads. So at most the number given in the "extra-core-arg" entry should be 6. Otherwise there is an increased risk of failure.

Re: First post be gentle :)
As I suggested above, a midrange-GPU with the help of a single CPU is able to outproduce the best of CPUs. A lot depends on your definition of "decent points" (Consider the fact that at one time, single-core CPUs like the Pentium4 produced one point per WU.) Nevertheless, if your CPU produces XX% of what your GPU does, running both will produce (100+XX)%, no matter what value XX takes on.Pepperami wrote:Maybe my expectation of the CPU is too high, probably because I do not fully understand how it works, and because I have an i7 CPU which I thought was probably at the time the best that money could buy it would be capable of racking up some decent points but maybe not
