GPU Not Getting a WU

Post by gebraset »

Hello all!

Previously I used to fold but the majority of it was using V6, and without a GPU. Now, I have a laptop with adequate cooling that I would like to begin folding on, getting myself and my team back into the game a bit more while helping science.

My CPU seems to be doing just fine. My GPU on the other hand is at ready, and by looking at the logs, is not folding because it cannot retrieve a WU. Is there a proper fix to correct this? I am pretty sure that my GPU is supported, as I have checked the previously posted whitelist.

Any help would be much appreciated, and thank you in advance!

Hello gebraset, welcome to the forum.

Try adding the setting "client-type" set to "advanced" under the Slots Configuration for the GPU.

Thank you very much, that did do the trick! It seems like the GPU is folding now, and I hope to see some good results as the progress bar updates soon.

Is there any way to lessen the load the GPU is put on by F@H? You can set the CPU lower, which helps with overall temperatures, but I am not seeing any option for the GPU load percentage.

Usually the preferred method to limit CPU usage and temperature is to leave Power & Percent CPU usage sliders to full & 100% and limit the number of CPU cores. Your APU has only two FPUs anyway (although they're 256bit wide), so try setting your CPU slot to use only 2 CPUs. Hopefully that'll drop temperatures sufficiently - including GPU temperature, since both are on the same APU anyway.

Unfortunately, GPU folding is pretty much on/off thing.

Understood, thank you for the information. Setting it to 2 cores really did not help my temperatures too much, nor did lowering the amount of utilization taking place (attempted 100%, 75%, and 50%). I'll just have to deal with some high temps here and there and keep the room now and cool while using a laptop cooler. No issues with that!

I think most everyone dealing with a laptop has to do that, along with regular dedusting. Here's something that I took the risk to try: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=23942&p=239567 but that may or may not apply to your laptop. I'm not recommending it, but it's something that you could consider trying at your own risk if it's applicable.
