Sanity check: Is this proper Kepler throttling?

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Sanity check: Is this proper Kepler throttling?

Post by coredump4 »

I got a great deal on an open-box EVGA GTX 650 "SuperClocked" 1GB GDDR5 board recently, so I wanted to test out its Folding performance relative to the GTX 560 Ti I also have. Not to mention, Folding is a great burn-in test for any used or open-box gear.
My initial test went fine in terms of stability, but the 650's performance was about half of the 560 Ti. I was expecting the two to be more similar, largely due to having the same number of shaders. But since the 650 is my first exposure to Kepler, I just want a sanity check of what I'm seeing. When looking around for clues, I saw that the 650 might have been throttling during folding. I've heard the Keplers can do this, but I got mixed information from the EVGA "NV-Z" monitoring tool. Here's the 650 when idle; notice the Current and Max GPU core clocks in the P8 & P0 states. And as expected, the Current PState's GPU clock matches the "GPU clock" value below:
Image
However, while folding, look what happens not only to the Max GPU clock, but that the Current PState's GPU clock doesn't match the GPU clock shown below:
Image
So this leads me to think 1 of 3 things is happening:
1) The GPU is throttling, but if so, why the apparent discrepancies in the reported current core clock?
2) The NV-Z tool and/or GeForce driver are reporting incorrect clock data;
3) Both 1) & 2) are happening.

Environment: WinXP SP3 32-bit, GeForce 314.07 driver, FAHclient 7.3.6.

Thanks for any insight into this behavior.

Have you tried using a different monitoring tool like GPU-Z to verify the finding of EVGA? Make sure that you don't run more than one monitoring tool at a time as it may conflict with another and cause issues.

Also, please post the Project number and the Time Per Frame (TPF) so that others with the same GPU can look at it and comment if it is within the acceptable range or not. If you are not sure how to do it, please post the log here within the Code Tags (in the Full Editor).

Given that NV-Z is only picking up 1MB of GDDR 5 i would say that it is not reading properly, As panther suggests - download and run GPU-Z

I loaded GPU-Z on that system, but haven't swapped the 650 back in yet, but I'll do that in the next day or two and report back. Though I will say, on another system I have, every tool reports the card's RAM improperly except GPU-Z...

It is project 7626. I don't know how to properly calculate TPF from the log, though if a "step" in the log corresponds to a fold then it would be easy. Anyway, here's the log... note that FAHclient refers to the GTX 650 as a "GT 650":

Re: Sanity check: Is this proper Kepler throttling?

Post by bruce »

Divide the number of steps by the total number of steps in more than one line such as these two.

15:48:37:WU00:FS01:0x15:Completed 18000000 out of 40000000 steps (45%).
18:46:15:WU00:FS01:0x15:Completed 22400000 out of 40000000 steps (56%).

In most cases, you'll get the percentage shown at the end of the line (but occasionally the percentage contains a fractional percentage that is rounded off). Subtract:

56%-45% = 11%
18:46:15-15:48:37 = 3h1m38s

Divide: 3h1m38s / 11 = 999 seconds per frame (aka percent) = 16m31s

That's an average over 11 frames. Of course it's easier to just pick one specific percent.
16:09:10:WU00:FS01:0x15:Completed 18400000 out of 40000000 steps (46%).
16:24:53:WU00:FS01:0x15:Completed 18800000 out of 40000000 steps (47%).
16:24:53-16:09:10 = 8m43s

or

06:01:49:WU00:FS01:0x15:Completed 39600000 out of 40000000 steps (99%).
06:17:31:WU00:FS01:0x15:Completed 40000000 out of 40000000 steps (100%).
15m42s

Clearly the time is changing very significantly which usually means that FAH is competing with other programs and there's no way to establish a single value that applies to each frame.

coredump4,

I can give you a fairly direct comparison, with both a GTX 650 Ti (twice the shaders as a GTX 650) and a GTX 560 (non-Ti) on the same motherboard. I was averaging about the same PPD on each for Folding, depending on the project. The harder ones (more complex molecules presumably) favored the GTX 650 Ti with its larger number of shaders, while the simpler ones favored the GTX 560 with its higher shader clock rate. I don't have them running anymore, since they do not get along well for Folding, but the bottom line is that you should expect to get about 1/2 the PPD on your overclocked GTX 650 as on your GTX 560 Ti (which I also have, but on a different PC).

Bruce,
Thanks for that explanation!

JimF,
Thanks for the comparison. It sounds like my 650 is behaving properly, I just overestimated it relative to the 560 Ti. I really like the 560 Ti, and I got it as an open-box item for $77, so that was quite worth it. Not bleeding edge anymore, but still quite good for folding.
