Didn' t realize this was Beta. Ug. Well, got it converted from .deb to .rpm with alien but upon install it says i need a library which has to do with systemd and our OS doesn't use systemd. Sigh.

Should i just go back to the 7.x version?

v8.3.18 became the official release a couple months back, the current beta is v8.4.9. I just have not taken the time to redo the topic and split out posts from the beta test period for it and prior releases to current issues.

Directions on how to build a RPM can be found here - https://github.com/FoldingAtHome/fah-cl ... ING-RPM.md.

Thanks Joe!

the problem was not with creating the .rpm but with trying to install it because it evidently requires libraries that have to do with systemd. Not all of us Linux users have switched or want to switch to systemd.

Have a wonderful afternoon! And, thanks for answering / Wow / so fast!!! :)

If you build it yourself, it should work without systemd. But you also cannot use the installer, which only works with systemd.

Thanks calaxlot! Since i don't know how to build - that's not going to help very much. However i opened up and looked at the .rpm file and all it is is a bunch of directories and sub-directories, each with one or more files ... If i copied each file to its correct directory/sub-directory, would the program work then?

Just asking - lol

Have a radiant evening and be happy! :)

You may need to create init.d scripts if you want it to run as a service.

Easy to just run it manually. The client uses the current working directory when launched.

If you don’t have systemd, you *must* build it yourself using the instructions at the link joe provided.

Thanks again, calxalot. You're correct, of course. i got the fah-client in /usr/bin and used a terminal to see if i could run it. Nope. It reports that i need the systemd library.

Well, i first need to figure out which method i must follow to build this by figuring out with which OS my OS is compatible / Redhat, OpenSuse or Fedora...

So, we'll continue in the morning. Happy dreams! :)

As i understand the .rpm usage, it is just to install the fah-client in the proper sub-directory? Is this not correct? If it is, then i don't need to "build" anything. All i need is the fah-client file without any reference to systemd so that i can just copy it to the proper sub-directory.

Or, what am i missing. ChatGPT tells me to upload the file so that it can examine it to see if it is systemd-free, but i can't figure out which file to upload - lol

Have a great day! :)

ChatGPT is a friendly dementia patient. Don’t ask it.

You must build the client yourself to get one without a systemd dependency. You don’t need to build the package “scons package”.

Sigh, so, i'm stuck since i really don't know how to build ...

Maybe i can just copy back the 3 files i copied out of the sub-directory and it'll just start up again in ver 7.x.

Thanks again calxalot for being so patient. Have a beautiful Sunday afternoon! :)
