[email protected] - Win11 - Resources not available

Post by malkie »

Most of the time my Machines" tab shows only running WUs, but several times I have seen a "Resources not available" status on an unstarted WU. Other WUs are using all of the resources that are available.

Should I leave the WU alone and let it start up when the other WUs complete, and resources are then available, or should I dump it?

It looks like no WU has been assigned, so you can probably dump without impacting your bonus point qualification.

You might want to set to finish, and when the GPU WU is done create a separate resource group for the gpu with CPUs set to zero. Then the available CPUs won’t fluctuate, causing interruptions to cpu work.

Thanks.

I think I follow :D

My machine has 8 CPUs, with 6 assigned to F@H.

Sometimes during the day things get a bit sluggish, and I Pause for a while, but I was thinking that it might be better to reduce the assigned # of CPUs.

Also, at night, there should be no reason for me not to assign all 8 CPUs, except I suppose there's a possibility that my machine might overheat.

It's an old machine - Ryzen 5 3400G - but I can't justify spending money on an better one :(

Any suggestions?

You might want to try folding on the GPU only and see what kind of averages you get. Folding on both at the same time can cause both to take a hit in points and the overall throughput doesn't raise as much.

I folded on a 2400G for over 50 million points, and it was rock solid. It was just a solid with the integrated GPU overclocked. By folding on GPU only throws a lot less heat, and less noise depending on your fan curves.

Memory can always make a lot of difference on the systems with integrated graphics as well. For basic systems they fold better than many people think. They will never be powerhouses but they are fairly efficient and still fold just fine.

On my system if the GPU was overclocked it created a lot more heat and fan noise if I also CPU folded at the same time. But on GPU alone the heat change is very minimal and the throughput was similar if not better then folding on both CPU and GPU with stock settings.

As long as the system still meets deadlines there is no reason not to fold on it. You might also have the option to add a small standalone GPU if your power supply and motherboard support it.

Thanks, Bob - I'll try using the GPU only.

Returning to report!

As suggested by BobWilliams757, I set up my machine for GPU-only folding. It's back to running cool and quiet, and without noticeable slowdowns. I don't see the Resources not available message any more. So, in effect, I can just let F@H run 24/7 and not worry about anything.

I know the guy who runs the local computer repair shop, and will ask him if he has an inexpensive graphics card that I can use. If not, I'm still happy - getting through about 7 or 8 WUs per week, and Ranked 354,979 :D

Malkie,

I'm glad it helped you sort things out. With AMD iGPU systems running both CPU and GPU folding is taxing, running either by itself not so bad. With GPU only, you should hardly notice it's running.

Also, having taken a look at your returns, keep in mind that not completing work units by the timeout hurts both folding and your points. The more work units you complete on time, the higher your return percentages, and once you are above 80% finished ratio you can get bonus points if you registered a passkey. If for some reason you are not making timeout deadlines when folding 24/7 you should report it here on the forums. It's possible that the assignments are too aggressive for the classification species of the GPU if that is the case.

If you do get a discrete GPU, the CPU is more than enough. If you make the right selection you can also keep it cool and quiet, and fold a lot more points as well.

Thanks, Bob.

Everything seems to be completing on time, although the current WU looks like it will complete with less "spare" time than previous ones - it's due to finish after 21 hours of running, and the difference between assign and timeout time is 24 hours.

I'm not interested in points at all - I just like the idea of my machine doing something useful with the potential computing power.

I appreciate your help - thanks again!
