Ryzen 7840HS - another data point

Greetings!

My lab needed yet another gizmo and just acquired a Beelink SER7 mini pc.

AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics (16) @ 5.293GHz
F@H v7.6.21 on Arch Linux produces on the order of 500,000 +/- PPD consuming 2-3 watts

Ryzen 9 7940HS version is on the market, but about 25% price premium for little improvement and higher heat and power requirements.

Seems to be a current market dump of similar units with the pending introduction of new Ryzen 9 89xxH processors, which will still feature the identical Radeon 780M graphics with a very slight boost in CPU frequency.

Currently not able to figure which AMD graphics drivers Arch needs to fire up folding on the iGPU.
Interesting that user can set the amount of installed system ram to dedicate to the graphics unit in UEFI setup. Default is 4GB

The SER7 review by ServeTheHome measured 6-10W at idle, 44-46W sustained and 77-79W peak.

Here is snapshot of Conky while folding on the SER7

Top portion under RYZEN 7840 shows the watts and CPU cycles
Bottom under PROCS shows the FahCore

This unit has an obscure NSC/ITE chip that sensors-detect does not recognize and that there is no corresponding kernel module, so I take the power reading from the running PPT on a five second scan, and which also shows an average of 44W.

Power consumed "at the wall" is not power being consumed by the folding CPU ... there are fans, memory and ports. After half a day uptime the box is still chill and cool to the touch with no noticeable hotspots. The 58C core temp is another telltale.

I recently purchased the Beelink SER8 for the purpose of replacing a laptop for a permanent development workstation with AMD integrated graphics. It has the Ryzen 8845HS, which is essentially the same 8c/16t CPU and 780M iGPU as the 7840HS. Installed Pop!_OS on it and have been running the COSMIC Epoch desktop environment with a 4K 144 Hz display next to a 4K 60 Hz display rotated vertically beside it. Also installed ROCm via the System76's support guide: https://support.system76.com/articles/rocm/.

Both the iGPU and CPU have been processing work units for a couple days. I'm seeing around 500-600K PPD per day. They both have to share the same 54W cTDP, which limits the upper frequencies that they can boost to. So the GPU gets around 200-250K PPD, while the CPU 300-350K PPD. With the CPU at full load, the GPU is limited to operating at 76% shader clock frequency (2 GHz out of 2.7 GHz). While the CPU fluctuates between 3.5 and 4.4 GHz.

It's nowhere near as efficient as a NVIDIA dGPU, such as the RTX 3080 generating 8M PPD. But the system produces no sound, very little heat, and consumes much less energy. I will try to get my RTX 3080 back onto Folding@Home after summer is over.

Thanks for adding information to the mix, mmstick!

I have yet to find a way to light off the 780M iGPU on my Beelink. I am running straight Arch Linux and have tried to install the ROCm driver with little success. The gpu still shows FAILED on FAHControl version 7.6.21. (Of course, the unit display graphics are just fine!) I will follow your link to System76 ROCm and see what I can do.
