Any way to force extra core during a current WU?

One of my laptops shutdown today, and when I rebooted it had lost a core. I've swapped in a different cpu, but the current wu only seems to be using 1 core. This is a core 2 duo which I usually have set to 2 cores in the advanced slot setting, but I think when I rebooted with a single core, FAH defaulted back to -1 and allocated 1 core. Setting it back to 2 in the advanced slot control shows 2 on the status, but only 1 core appears to be folding and the estimated ETA has tripled, taking it to well beyond timeout.
I seem to remember that adding cores only starts for the next wu, so I'm wondering if there's any way to force that without losing the wu. It's a big wu for the laptop, and eta is now 2.7 days, which seems like a waste. It was sitting on 1.2 days when the original cpu faulted.
It's not the hardware, as I've swapped the HDD into another known good laptop, and behaviour is the same.
