New client install will not run

Hi. I am a bit of a novice here, but I have successfully installed and am running FAH client on four different machines. This latest time though, the installer finishes successfully, but hen then when I click finish (or whatever that button is) and check start F@H client, nothing opens. Next I run the FAH Control program from the start menu. Under Clients, I have Local but the status is "connecting". The address is 127.0.0.1:36330. Also, in the other pane, it says "Clients: local Connecting Inactive". This is a Win 10 OS. This is an enterprise managed computer but so are all my others. While doing these steps I am escalated to Administrator.
After the install, I have rebooted and get the same thing. Also, I have uninstalled and reinstalled and even downloaded a fresh install package and reinstalled. Based on some googling, it was suggested that I ping 127.0.0.1 from command prompt. That was successful, but it got me now where.
Can anyone please help with some basic troubleshooting steps?
Thanks
Matt

My first guess is that you have a corrupt configuration file. Was this a reinstall without agreeing to delete data? FAH is totally intolerant of encountering corrupt .xml files.
My second guess is a permissions problem somehow associated with the FAH working files.

It looks a bit like a case from a few weeks back, where a machine had a software installed from a game distribution platform (GOG) that was using directories named after FAH.
Any peculiar (for an entreprise managed computer) software installed on that PC?

Welcome to the F@H Forum MattRoo99,
Please note that if it's an enterprise managed system, you may not own it so permission (generally written) is required from the system owners (Internal IT, IT Security, CISO, CTO, etc) who are authorized to make that call.
I believe that the issue would be the FAHClient isn't running on your system. We would need more details and potentially a log file to see what has happened. Guidance is provided here if needed: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=26036

Thanks, everyone for your replies. I feel like the FAHClient is not even running. Here is the log that I found, not too much to it.
Code: Select all
*********************** Log Started 2020-05-13T06:42:16Z ***********************
06:42:16:Trying to access database...
06:42:16:Successfully acquired database lock
06:42:16:Read GPUs.txt
06:42:16:Enabled folding slot 00: PAUSED cpu:5 (not configured)
06:42:18:Enabled folding slot 01: PAUSED gpu:0:GP104GLM [Quadro P4200 Mobile] (not configured)
Answers to other questions -
- -I do have permission to use this software on my enterprise computer (but IT has said they will not support it -haha.)
-As well, there IS indeed "peculiar" software installed on this machine. I can remove it actually but it is also installed on my other machines running FAH.
-I don't recall all my troubleshooting steps, but I do know that at some point I installed FAH and then uninstalled and reinstalled. At some point, it asked me if I wanted to delete something and I said yes.
Based on this log, do you have any other suggestions? I will remove the other software if you don't think there is a smoking gun.
Thanks
Matt

That log was created on 2020-05-13T06:42:16 UTC which means that FAHClient did start as it generated the log file.
Uninstall the client and select the option to delete the data. Then do a fresh installation of V7.6.13 and hopefully, it will work fine on the first attempt. Make sure you have chosen the option to run on Windows start-up.

Earlier today, I uninstalled all the odd software on the computer. Only Microsoft stuff on there now. Just now I uninstalled the FAH client. It asked me if I wanted to remove "Data" and I checked the box for yes and proceeded. The uninstall stopped at some point and said I needed to stop all instances of the FAH Client. I went to Task Master and killed the running FAHClient and then the uninstall proceeded successfully. I rebooted. Then I downloaded V7.6.13 and installed (and chose the startup option) successfully. Same problem as before. I can see the client is running but neither the control panel nor the web client will connect to anything. This computer was just recently given to me. Maybe the old owner screwed with some setting somewhere. I will keep digging. Thanks for your help.

Okay, now that you have removed the data file and performed a fresh installation, please post the entire log file here. Guidance is provided here depending on the OS you're running: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=26036

Here is the first log after the fresh install. Note that I previously followed the instructions in the Uninstall section of the Windows FAQ.
Code: Select all
*********************** Log Started 2020-05-14T06:12:23Z ***********************
06:12:23:Trying to access database...
06:12:23:Successfully acquired database lock
06:12:24:Downloading GPUs.txt from assign1.foldingathome.org:80
06:12:24:Connecting to assign1.foldingathome.org:80
06:12:24:Read GPUs.txt
06:12:24:Enabled folding slot 00: PAUSED cpu:5 (not configured)
06:12:25:Enabled folding slot 01: PAUSED gpu:0:GP104GLM [Quadro P4200 Mobile] (not configured)
And here is another after subsequent reboots.
Code: Select all
*********************** Log Started 2020-05-14T16:49:58Z ***********************
16:49:58:Trying to access database...
16:49:58:Successfully acquired database lock
16:49:58:Read GPUs.txt
16:49:58:Enabled folding slot 00: PAUSED cpu:5 (not configured)
16:49:59:Enabled folding slot 01: PAUSED gpu:0:GP104GLM [Quadro P4200 Mobile] (not configured)
Just for the heck of it, I installed FAH 7.5.1. It ended up acting the same way, but in this case the log was a bit different and has some more info that might be useful. Now, I am back to 7.6.13.

I have gone through much of the information in the Windows installation section. One thing to note- After installation is complete, this should happen "The Web Control (client manager) interface will start automatically after a few seconds. The Web Control page will prompt to configure a FAH user identity (see figure 14)." This does not happen.
I have added FAHClient to "Allow apps to communicate through Windows Defender Firewall" under System and Security Settings.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Matt

Another thing I noticed, I was looking at some other threads,
viewtopic.php?f=108&t=35239 and I don't have a config.xml file. I only have sample-config.xml. Not sure if that helps or not.
Thanks again.
Matt

The file config.xml is normally created during the process that you just said before doesn't happen ("The Web Control page will prompt to configure a FAH user identity...").
Something is preventing a complete installation, as if there was a leftover from a previous installation, or something odd blocking the process.
I don't know. I would start by uninstalling with a tool like Revo Uninstaller, making a deep scan, or at least check and if need be manually delete the folder AppData%\FAHClient after the uninstall. If that doesn't work, I would try to find some error that happened during installation using the Event Viewer - maybe there is some clue to find there. And if that doesn't help, I would consider a windows reset, a clean one. But for an enterprise computer, you might need some IT authorization and/or guidance.

Ok, those are good things for me to take a look at. I will. And thanks for your help I really appreciate it!
