This may be circumstantial evidence, but I've noticed that when my machine cant get a WU (according to log entries), I will almost always get a WU right away if I reboot Windows.

The longer the client runs without getting a Work Unit, the less often it asks for one.
After a reboot, the timer starts over.
It just checks more often after a reboot, for awhile.

A simpler way to have the same effect is to pause the client, wait a bit, then restart folding as this resets the retry timer ... Please don't overuse this - wait until the retry timer is at least 3-4 hours otherwise it just exacerbates the busy server problem.

Quitting and restarting the Client has the same effect.

In the Advanced Control (FAHControl) you can also right click, and pause a slot, then wait a while, then start it again.
However this should only be done when the displayed "Next Attempt" for this particular slot is high (say, 1-2h)!
Either method should not be used excessively, it only causes more load on the already hard-pressed FAH server infrastructure.
