Performance of a R9 390X for 200$ is in my opinion also interesting for people who don't want to spend 800$ for a Pascal, but also want a good folding performance for low price.

It's going to be an interesting summer.

Would be interesting when these cards are released what is the optimum "money to buy" vs. PPD vs. "Watt usage" for all cards AMD and Nvidia.
So for the question e.g. to build a PC with 4 GPUs which GPUs will be the optimum average for all 3 values?

Why are you assuming you have to optimize all GPUs.

I wouldn't count future CPUs out of the game. The advanced instruction sets that have been supported in the past and may be supported in the future allow for a lot of parallelism. Building for the optimum configuration with 4 GPUs is a nice goal, but the people who design CPUs will make the 5th one out of the CPU -- and it's not going to cost an extra $800.

GROMACS can support these advanced instruction sets and Stanford needs to figure out how to use THAT version of GROMACS.

In PC with QuadCore CPU and 4xGPU currently the cpu cores are only used to support the GPUs.
But you are right with future optimized CPU FahCore and CPUs going to 8 core for lower than 800$ this horse will go fast again.

With an i7 a 4c4t CPU can maintain the GPUs using the 4 threads, while you could fold on 1 or more of the 4 actual CPU cores. A GPU doesn't use an FPU at all, so folding on the CPU would still work well enough.

FINALLY. That's a practical way for us to use HyperThreading.,,, to support GPU cores while leaving the FPU (mostly) dedicated to the matching twin..

Interesting. Next AMD Zen CPUs also implement Hyperthreading so this could get the standard.

All recent AMD CPUs have HT -- except AMD doesn't use the Intel trade-name. Fundamentally the CPU is made up of modules which share one FPU with two ALUs. Intel use the term Virtual-Cpu for {one-ALU with half a FPU}. AMD called it a CPU, making is sound like the FPU wasn't shared.

Release of the RX480 is tomorrow.

Looks like a R9 390 performance with lower watt usage. But gtx 1070 is faster with same watt usage.

Now the 480 is released any one know if this card is already supported or does any one have one tell us what it's like with f@h

How sure are you that this is not an AMD card? As I understand it AMD bought ATI a decade ago in 2006.

I know amd took over ati I still thought they used the atI branding as ive seen in shops I've adjusted the topic discription. From review it seems in terms of performance the 480 is similar to the 980 still wondering how it will perform on the f@h front
