(102 = 0x66) using sci-biology/foldingathome:Gentoo

Due to the sudden relegation of the 6.34 client that I ran for years, I have been struggling to get the 7.4.4 client working properly on 64-bit Gentoo.

I wish to run ONLY the SMP client on a QX9650. This combination has been folding for literally years (probably 7 or 8) problem-free, 24/7 with the old 6.34 console client.

First, the package installs to /opt, which I consider a bit strange. Not a deal-breaker, though. Second, it will not run as a regular user. When ./initfolding runs as a regular user, it claims not to have the required permissions to write config.xml.

./initfolding DOES complete as root. It also will successfully run ./FAHClient as root, with the following result, endlessly:

Code: Select all

root@Q6600: /opt/foldingathome# ./FAHClient

So, my questions are:
Is it correct that the client runs only as root? I have always thought this was not correct.

What is (102 = 0x66) and what can be done about it? The client looks like it downloads the WU but the core fails to engage properly. My searches for this error on the forums here haven't helped, although I've read several long threads, none of them bear any similarities.

Have you tried the FAHClient-only tarball releases? Available at https://fah.stanford.edu/projects/FAHCl ... llReleases

Never mind the "Beta" bit in the link, 7.4.4 is the official version these days. Not too different from v6 console client, just "tar xjvf ..." in your home directory (root or not), do "./FAHClient --configure" and you should be good to go. "./FAHClient --help" will list all command line switches - there's a legion of them for CLI fans.

See also the Linux install guide on the fah web site.

Thank you for your suggestion.

I tried it out, untarred it into my ~ directory, ran the configuration, chose "false" for the GPU option, and ran the client. It produced exactly the same result as the package in Portage did, 'INTERRUPTED (102 = 0x66)'.

I have no idea where to go at this point. It *feels* like a dependency problem, but the package manager did not ask for any other support packages to be installed when I installed it that way, so I'm stumped. Perhaps there are some arguments I should be adding to the command.

There must be some other Gentoo users out there who have it working, maybe they'll weigh in.

I have not had the same problems on Ubuntu, however I use the deb and it's a "supported" install.

My install creates a user named 'fahclient' and does runs the fahclient service as that user. It's not necessary to run it as root (except the install) but obviously the file permissions need to match those of the user. FAHControl runs within my own user permissions and learns everything it needs by interchanging messages with the fahclient background process running in the faclient userspace. (or, FAHControl can be run remotely with the proper network permissions.)

I have no experience with Gentoo.

Thanks, bruce. Apparently the ebuild for gentoo does not change the ownership (I think it should), so I ran chown -R on the install directory and changed the ownership to my regular user. The client now runs OK as the normal user, but errors out in the same way as before with 102 = 0x66. And incidentally, I believe this is a 'supported' install method, according to special permissions issued to the Gentoo project by Pande: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22524&p=242433&hilit=gentoo+folding#p242020

I also tried running it in a parallel install of Debian. In that OS it runs fine, although for some reason it uses only 75% of CPU. This isn't a solution, though. It just proves to me that it isn't a hardware problem that creates the error.

That brings me back to possibly a dep problem, a USE= flag missing somewhere, or perhaps something missing in the kernel. Or maybe I am missing a command line switch/argument that I'm not aware of. I don't even know where to begin. It's a shame that it has been made so difficult, on the same machine, where it was so simple before with the 6.x clients.

The 75% usage is understandable, by default the client reserves one CPU core to handle a GPU slot if it sees a supported GPU in the system. That is for folding on the Full setting, one less CPU if the system is at the default of Medium for a desktop. If a GPU s not configured, by default Medium would also use 3 on a four core system.

There have been other folders who have used Gentoo, and have posted about it. Perhaps you will find a clue to the issue you are running into in one of their posts.

Well, I've searched at length for other support questions on Gentoo, and all of the existing ones pre-date the v7 client, as far as I can see. I've been running on Gentoo for over 8 years, and have never had so much trouble getting it running. Running the GPU client on Gentoo in WINE was far easier.

Thanks for the skinny on the 75%. There must be a CL switch to set the client to Full rather than Medium, which I guess would consume all of the cores. Unfortunately, I discovered the 75% usage on Debian rather than in my Gentoo install, so it isn't a solution for me. I've made an attempt to contact the package maintainer, 'axs', and I hope he will be able to offer some insight.

Are you planning on folding with the GPU? The 9600 GT is a relatively old GPU with limited resources so it's not clear (to me, at least) whether {75% of a quad CPU + 1 GPU} is a better configuration than {100% of a quad CPU + 0 GPUs}.

If you're planning on upgrading the GPU, then the former configuration will certainly be better than the latter. I want to strongly discourage you from trying to run {100% of a quad CPU + 1 GPU}. Yes, it's possible, but you won't like the results.

No, as you see in the OP I disabled the GPU option. I want to run only the CPU client.

To select the latter configuration, use the Advanced Control (FAHControl.exe) you can change the CPU slot from the default setting (-1) to your desired setting of 4. [Configure + slots + CPU + 4 plus a few OKs and save.] The active WU will resume from the previous checkpoint and you'll see a warning, but it's not likely something you need to worry about.

My problem isn't the configuration; it's this error message.

I've read what you said in another [old] thread about this INTERRUPTED thing, but as I'm doing nothing to interrupt the process or pause it, IDK what's wrong.

Basically, if I can't get this thing running in Gentoo, I'm done with folding after 80 million points and 8 or 9 years. It's sad that it is so much more difficult than the deprecated console clients. I have enjoyed the time I've spent on the project, and was once in the top 100 donors for quite some time. I'll miss it.

Not to be unsympathetic, but the problem is an unsupported Linux distro.

axs posted a contact email in the thread you linked. Maybe he can be of more help.

And not meaning to be pedantic, 7im, but there's UNSUPPORTED and 'unsupported'.

I posted this in the 'unsupported distros' forum, actually, against my better judgement [I was going to put it into the main public release forum, but stopped myself] , knowing that eventually I would hear exactly that from someone, lolz. :ewink:

PG provides .rpm and .deb installers for those 6 'supported' distros. And then, there's Gentoo. In a time-consuming endeavour, axs was finally able to get special permissions granted to install the client through Gentoo's third-party package manager. The code was reviewed by Joe Coffland and the permissions were granted by PG for the current version and all future versions. Doesn't sound like "this is an unsupported distro", exactly.

I think you're referring more to a user taking the package intended for Debian, say, and attempting to get it to run in SUSE/Arch/somesuch. And that isn't what this is at all. This is a package installer specifically licensed and intended to be used in Gentoo. It may be buggy. That is what we are attempting to find out. If we can figure out something, I will certainly file a bug on the Gentoo Bugtracker.

Anyhow, I did hear from axs a day or two ago via email, and he told me he would stop in here to read the thread as soon as he has time, so maybe he can make a suggestion.

Also not meaning to be pedantic, there is a big difference between permission given to redistribute the client and "supported". All that was given was permission to repackage and distribute the folding client, which normally is not allowed under the terms of usage that go with this software. Normally downloads are only allowed from the Stanford servers and organizations connected directly to PG.

What was reviewed was the packaging to see that it complied with the terms and did not bring in any unconnected items or install with unnecessary privileges. So, Gentoo remains an "Unsupported" Linux distro by PG. Support for the Gentoo repackaging is from axs and any others connected to that work.
