Potential Diabetes Breakthrough

If these initial results in mice are replicated in humans, this would be very good news indeed. In the United States we currently spend $200 billion annually for treatment of diabetes – with probably half of that cost picked up by taxpayers. If betatrophin pans out in human trials, the cost of diabetes treatment should drop dramatically. Plus, this will extend average life span by (who knows?) how many years since diabetes is a major risk factor in heart disease, stroke, and other life threatening diseases.
This is exciting. Genetic discoveries like this keep rolling out of research labs. The pace of these type discoveries will continue to accelerate. It won’t be much longer until nearly everyone (except heavy smokers and heavy drinkers) live to be one hundred. And to think ... one hundred years ago average life span was what - 49 years old?
