Has the client.cfg file been edited incorrectly?

Edited? Don't. Updating the client configuration is properly done with the -config or -configonly switch. Otherwise, this is the problem you'll get. ;)

Ooh... he'll be happy to hear that.
At least the mystery has been partially solved.

I know that he is not one to manually edit the client.cfg file, so the answer to the problem still remains to be found.

Thanks for the help. :)

It's like speeding, most everyone does, few admit to it. ;) Regardless of the cause (editing, human error, bad sector on the hard drive, power outage) the result is the same. The friend needs to update the config.

Upon further investigation, it was admitted that manual editing had taken place.
Proper schooling has been applied.

Thanks for the help.
