PPD

I am folding on 3 machines and getting only about 2000 ppd. I am on a spending budget of $0, sense I am 13 and trying to make the best of what I have. I have a 2 PCs and a PS3 folding.

1st question: Is there anyway to get more out of my ps3? It is a very nice machine and very reliable. Getting me only 251 pts every 5 hours. Any possible way I can double or triple that?

2nd question: I have a newer PC that is Dell, but I don't know what client to run, It is a VERY FAST machine, but I'm only getting maybe 200- 300 ppd from it. I'm running the GPU and SMP clients and am only getting 89 pt wus and 116 pt wus.
Other than that I don't know how to show what kind of computer I have.

Thanks
-Noah

Your Dell is probably running Windows 7, but even if it's an older version, you should be able to right-click on Computer and select Properties. It will tell us the main things we need to know about what "VERY FAST" means.

The other piece of information that would be useful would be what type of GPU you have. From the screen mentioned above, you should be able to select Device Manager and then click on the arrow beside Display Adapter.

If you know that you've been getting 89 pt wus and 116 pt wus, you've probably found FAHlog. Posting some portions of that will also provide additional information. To make it look nice in the post, you can put it between two tags:
and
Thank you so much for your help, bruce. I will post the information tonight.

Manufacturer: Dell

Model: Inspiron 560

Processor: Pantium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5700 @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz

System Type: 64-bit Operating system

Intel(R) G45/G43 Express Chipset

And It wouldn't allow me to post the log ???

As someone new to the forum, you may have been limited because the log contained a URL (no links allowed) or because it was too big.

The E5700 is a reasonable computer for home use but it doesn't compare with the ones the gamers like to build/buy. I'd say 2000 PPD is about right.

There's really nothing you can do with the PS3 except to be sure it's folding when it's not being used for something else.
The Dell will do well with SMP and the points will increase once you've folded 10 WUs with a passkey.
The older PC might or might have a setting or two we could work on, but it's likely fine the way it is.

What UserName do you use for those machines? They all should use the same UserName and the two PCs should use your passkey.

That has me a bit worried you're running integrated graphics, which shouldn't run the GPU client at all and if it does, not very well. You could have discreet graphics as well, but in a pre-built like that it's likely you don't. I don't know why "it won't let you post the log". If you're running the v7 client, just go to the log tab and copy and paste. The other way is to go to C:\ProgramData\FAHClient\log.txt, open that in notepad and copy and paste. Oh and wrap them in code tags on the forum. The SYSTEM info at the top will give more detailed specs than what you just posted and the rest will let us look at your TPF to make sure you're getting the right performance.

Another thing about the GPU client, if it turns out you do have discreet graphics and they're ATI/AMD, it's gonna need a whole core to run it on. Meaning, with your dual core, you'll have to run uniprocessor and GPU, instead of SMP. Nvidia is better about this and you may be able to use SMP. If your graphics are Intel Integrated, which I suspect they may be, don't bother with GPU at all and just run SMP. It'll tell you under "GPU" in the SYSTEM part of your log file or you can go to Control Panel>System>Device Manger>Display Adapters in Windows.

At the present time, FAH should ignore all Intel GPU devices. They're not supported (yet?) whether integrated or discrete. If it's not being ignored, we'll see that in the log you post, but in any case, we want to know about it immediately.

A system can have both integrated graphics and a discrete GPU. If your OS supports that sort of dual graphics configuration, the integrated graphics will probably best be used for you monitor and the discrete GPU for folding, but there may be other considerations on your system.

A c2d@3Ghz netting 2000ppd sounds about right. My 2.4Ghz c2d gets about 1800ish. My core 2 quad @ 3.2 Ghz isn't even considered fast anymore. The i5, i7, and i9 just destroy the core 2 series procesors. Core 2 are great chips for most any game, and general computing task, but for serious number crunching (like folding) the i series is where it's at.

Any hardware you can bring to the project will certainly be put to good use, and be appreciated. Furthering science is the bottom line, points are just the icing on the cake. Like others have noted, just make sure you have a passkey entered on the pc clients.

And if you really catch the folding bug, you can always try asking for an upgrade ;) Doesn't hurt to try!

On windows, with default installation, that path is incorrect. For Windows Vista and 7, the path would be:
C:\Users\PantherX\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient\log.txt

Not sure what the path would be in Windows XP.

XP default locations:

V6 CPU Systray = C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Folding@home-x86\FAHlog.txt

V6 GPU Systray = C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Folding@home-gpu\FAHlog.txt

V7 = C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\FAHClient\log.txt
