I process units for approximately 7 hours per day, 5 days per week on my laptop.

90% of the time, the unit's deadline passes before it is completed.

How can I avoid this?

Hi and welcome to the forum!!

I am guessing that you are running the SMP client - projects using this client are designed to be run nearly 24/7, if you are not willing/able to run you laptop for longer periods of time i would suggest running the classic uniprocessor client

The obvious answer is to fold more time each day, or to fold more days per week. And to make sure the laptop is plugged in (not on battery) as much as possible so the laptop runs at full speed.

Without knowing more about your hardware, or which client you are running, any further suggestions would simply be wild guesses. Please post more info so we can offer the best options.

I've been folding for at least 4 years as OAP_Watty and have never had this problem before. I use the DOS client (I don't know the proper name for it) on a new Dell Studio 1737 laptop with INTEL CORE 2 DUO processors which is always plugged in and not running on battery. One client is dedicated to one processor and runs as a service and the other, dedicated to the 2nd processor, I start manually when my laptop isn't too busy.

Obviously, I could fold more but don't want to leave the machine on solely for the purpose of folding. This way of folding has worked fine for me up until recently.

The classic client's deadline is very lenient, over a month is sooner a rule then an exception I believe and it's hard to phantom you're not able to finish them in time with your usage pattern, but maybe I'm wrong. The sure way to tell what is what is if you posted the log files for both clients so we can take a look at what's happening.

It would be helpful, for diagnosis purposes, if you gave copies of the logs for the two clients that you are using. That way we could see what is actually going on.

That being said, it may be that, because of a power configuration issue, your new laptop is actually going to sleep rather than folding. Also, perhaps you have a screen saver (or other application scheduled to run when you are not actively on the machine) that is using the CPU at a higher priority than folding causing folding to not run in favor of the screen saver.

It is hard to believe that if you are using the uni-processor client that you'd be expiring WU's with their long deadlines (typically 30+ days) if everything was working correctly. However, if you have two SMP clients running at the same time then that could cause deadline issues. Even a single client running the SMP client could cause a problem if you are not giving it enough running time for their deadlines are much shorter (typically 4-7 days).

I know, I know, it's crazy isn't it? I've being doing this for years and it's only recently that this has started happening.

No, there is no screen saver running and no, my laptop never sleeps ( I don't trust sleeping or hibernating).

How should I post the logs? Should I just copy and paste the last few weeks worth?

P5-133XL's suggestions are along the lines of what I was going to say. You may have some background task gumming up the works, but to not finish something with a one-month deadline... maybe the computer is going to sleep? Otherwise, you really don't have it turned on that much of the time after all. Your log and what it indicates as far as TPF will be useful as others have said.

I'm sure you know how to check how many background tasks you have going, and it's worth looking into whether one (or many) of those is/are eating up a lot of clock cycles.

(edit) yeah, it looks like the client is frequently starting up, then shutting down not to long after. That is likely part of the issue. Looking at the time stamps in your log, it appears you are only running Folding for a few hours per day, so it's reasonable to expect the machine to not always meet deadlines.

Your TPF isn't awful, 18-20 minutes or so... it looks like you turn the computer on shortly after 9am, and turn the machine off a little after 3pm.

June 2, 6, 7, 8, and 9 were dates that the client ran. So you're only Folding on weekdays, too, 5 days out of 7. That work unit must have been received before June 2, because it didn't start at 0% in the portion of the log from June 2, so maybe you got it a day or three earlier than that, in which case yeah, you're not getting enough work done per day to make deadlines by June 2, since it's only on for several hours per day.

You either have to leave your laptop on longer, or experiment with what flags would yield protomol or gromacs projects instead of a4.

You could try small packet size, but that might not work, I wouldn't use advmethods as I think that will work the opposite and give you more a4 unit's. And, it wouldn't be a fixed solution as the wu mix will change in the future.

I didn't even realize how short the classic deadline's were now, last time I ran a classic client 30 days was the norm, but now it's 8 days which is pretty short. I know this was announced/said to happen at some time, I just didn't pay enough attention when it did.

(edit) yeah, it looks like the client is frequently starting up, then shutting down not to long after. That is likely part of the issue. Looking at the time stamps in your log, it appears you are only running Folding for a few hours per day, so it's reasonable to expect the machine to not always meet deadlines.
