Title changed from GPU client: "Error starting Folding@Home core" then sleeps
to Project: 6801 (Run 6018, Clone 3, Gen 9)

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
dual GTS 450s (running at stock speeds)
latest drivers
latest GPU client

GPU client keeps failing to engage core, then tries to download a new core, then throws the same error (Corestatus = 63 (99) then repeats the process until it decides to go to sleep.

I've always had problems with stability with GTS 450s in general, but this is the first time I've encountered this problem. It's happening on two different machines, though both machines share the exact same configuration of OS, drivers, and cards.

Any idea what's causing this and how to correct it?

Atom, welcome to the Fold. To get started, how about changing your configuration slightly. I don't know how you convey configuration options to the client (shortcut or the advance parameters tab) but lets change to: -gpu 0 -verbosity 9

The -forcegpu should not be needed with this newer version of the client and I would like to run without -advmethods for now. Then restart your client and let it run for a while. Then post a new complete log (like you did here). I did not see anything about Project: 6801 (Run 4184, Clone 3, Gen 31) in the Issues with a Specific Work Unit thread but perhaps one of the mods can check this for you.

I tried removing all the existing flags and just using "-verbosity 9" but the client wouldn't start. It kept giving the error telling me my card either wasn't supported or that I needed updated drivers. (I'm running driver version 267.59.) So I added back the -forcegpu flag along with the -verbosity 9 flag. Same thing happens. I tried deleting the work folder and the queue file--same thing. Here's the log with verbose mode enabled.

Ok, lets try to fall back to a previous graphics driver. The PantherX guide I refer to recommends 258.96. I have to admit I'm running a newer version, but this is a case where the latest drivers can cause problems with the scientific results. I know others are running with 266.xx. I would also suggest a clean sweep and reinstall of the drivers. You should not need the -forcegpu flag so please try removing it again. Then delete the work directory, queue.dat file and core 15. On the restart the client will recreate these and download the needed core. Please consult the PantherX guide for install and sweeping help: viewtopic.php?p=158850#p158850

Thanks for the help Hendricks, but no joy.

I looked at the 258.96 driver, but it doesn't say that it supports the 450 cards. Instead I did a clean install with the 260.89 driver. I deleted the work folder and the core and queue files, rebooted and still no luck. I have the GPU clients set to load upon Windows startup, and when they first attempt to startup, I get two error messages that I either don't have a supported card, or that I need updated drivers. Once I dismiss those errors, I can manually start both GPU client without error (though I still need the -forcegpu arguments to make them work.

I have two GTS 250 clients running fine, a GTX 260 which runs fine, a three-way 450 that is running fine now (after a bit of flakiness earlier), and a dual GTX 460 machine that has been rock steady for months. It seems (from my personal experience and from reading this and ther forums, that there's something weird that's specific to the 450 cards.)

What, specifically, does a Corestatus = 63 (99) error indicate?

I was thinking about the differences between this machine and the three-way 450 rig that has been working pretty well, and the one big difference I could think of was clock speed. The cards giving me trouble are MSI N450GTS cards that are "factory overclocked" to 850 MHz. I underclocked them to 796 MHz and they stopped throwing errors (at least initially.) I'll see if they remain stable at this speed.

After underclocking the shaders to 796 MHz and memory to 1798 I could get it to run for a while at least. I just saw that it went to sleep again after downloading and failing to get 5 cores to complete a work unit. I've included an excerpt from the log (since all 5 downloads will run over the max # characters for this post.)

So now I have 4 of these 450s that are sitting idle--wasting what could be 32-26K PPD. Can anyone else think of anything to adjust to get these working?

When something runs for "a little while" that means it's probably heat-related. Are your GPUs 2-slot affairs that push the hot air out the back, or 1-slot types that just recirculate it inside the case? How much cool air can get between the two GPUs or do they just keep each other warm?

Is your power supply able to deliver enough power to the GPUs?

Atom, tell us more about the "load upon Windows startup". I don't see evidence of a service launch in the log so I'm guessing you are putting a shortcut in your Startup Folder. Error 63 (99) is associated with a failure to meet some initial startup requirement. I'm guessing the obvious thing here - the need for the forcegpu flag and not recognizing the cards must be at the root of the problem. How to fix it has me stumped since this happened on two machines. Let me check that as well - is the other 450 machine running stable now? Is this problem on only this one machine?

Following what Bruce said, had this machine been running stable for some time and then just started with the error 63?

What version of Windows do you have? If you actually are trying to run a GPU client as a service, that cannot be done in Vista/Win7 due to a Microsoft security patch.

"Running for a little while" meant that it completed one work unit before throwing the error again. (I should have been more specific.) The cards are two-slot cards, and there's lots of space (an empty slot) between them. Still, the MSI fan shroud lets lots of air recirculate back into the cabinet. To address that, there's a fan blowing outside air on them, and I have good ventilation overall on these PCs. When folding, they maintain constant temps in the mid 70s (C). I really don't think it's an overheating issue.

Power supply is an OCZ StealthXstream2 600 Watt unit. It's a high-current PSU that puts out 72 Amps total on its four 12 Volt lines. That's plenty of power to run two 450s. Nvidia claims they max out at 106W. (By way of comparison, I have a dual GTX 460 folding rig running the same PSU with rock solid reliability , and my 3-way 450 folding rig has the 700 Watt version of this PSU, which puts out exactly the same 72 Amps on the 12 Volt rails.) Power shouldn't be a problem.

You're right, I simply placed shortcuts in the Startup folder. These are dedicated folding machines. They're located in my office, about 45 minutes from home. I'm almost never in my office, so it's handy to have the GPU client start automatically if the machine reboots for any reason. I can't tell you if the other dual 450 folding machine is working correctly now or not. I clicked "shut down" instead of "Restart" over the weekend by mistake when I was remotely connected and I need to get someone in the office to manually start the machine for me (I'm not going in to the office for a while.) But before I shut it down, it was experiencing the same "Corestatus = 63" problem.

I do have a third machine that's running three 450s, and they're running fine. None of the three cards in that machine are MSI cards, so that's one notable difference. Otherwise they're all running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, with the same drivers and f@h client versions. They also had the same Windows patches applied (I do them all at the same time.)

I built these machines fairly recently. I tested them at home for a while to gauge stability before moving them to my office. They ran fine at home for a week or so. Once I moved them to my office they started these chronic error messages. I'll try to get the other machine started tomorrow and give you an update after I underclock those cards, too. I can also try throttling these cards back even more to see if that helps.
