Hi guys, I hope this is the right section to post this. I'm new to the forum, but I've been folding for a year or two on a single CPU. My mom's office got a few new computers and she supports F@H so she volunteered the computers. I've got the CPU systray client running, and I wanted to get the GPU client running, too.

The two computers (identical) are running a quad core i5 and nvidia GeForce 310 cpu and 64-bit win7. From what I've found, this card is CUDA enabled, and should be capable of running the GPU client, although I'm sure it won't be setting any records. I went ahead and got the newest drivers, and I think I installed CUDA, too. This is embarrassing, I used to be great with computers, but haven't done much with them for a few years. Getting CUDA on my mac was much easier, but all I see on the Windows page is developer stuff, but I got that tool kit. I'm not sure if it's required, or what.

I installed the 6.32 GPU client (really not sure what's ideal for these cards, and I'm also not sure why it shows up as version 6.30r2, is that normal?) and they sat showing "working 0/0" for quite a while. Eventually they picked up work, but when it was finished they went back to "working 0/0" and haven't gotten work since. It shows this log file.

It seems to get hung up on the "sleep=10000" bit. I'm not familiar at all with the GPU stuff, so I'm not sure if this is normal for them to sit idle for quite a while between units, or what.

After a bit of investigating on my own, I began to think that maybe the 6.32 client was too advanced for the cards, since it talked about the Fermi stuff, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled the older 6.23 version. Then when I start it, it says that the graphics card isn't supported, or my drivers aren't new enough. I just updated them days ago, so I know the drivers aren't outdated, but I updated them again. What ensued caused more frustration, and reminded me why I lost interest in technology.

I checked the driver info from the Device Manager:

Driver version: 8.16.11.9104"

Then I clicked on the nVidia Control Panel from the desktop (right click) and got this:

That was right after I installed the newest 266.58 driver...

So I'm hung up and feeling pretty discouraged about the whole thing, but I'd like to get this straightened out. Thanks for taking the time to read it, I know it's a pretty mammoth first post..

Alright, that makes sense. I saw the edrfile hash bit pop up several times, but had no idea what it meant.

I found the work folder in the user data, but I'm not sure what to do next. How do I set up the shortcut like you recommended?

I saw other threads about the "FILE_IO_ERROR" and the "CoreStatus = 75 (117)" and some of them said it may be caused by AV programs. The computers are running Norton 2010, is that known to cause any issues?

Also, since I have the CPU client running and want to run the GPU client simultaneously, would it help to use the '-local' flag? I'm not sure how to set that up or configure the folders, though.

The -local flag is unnecessary.

A manually constructed shortcut contains two important pieces of data. The Target, and the Start in.

The Target should always contain the fully qualified name of the client executable.
The Start in should point to a place that the client can keep its datafiles.

If you're running Vista or Seven, Windows security prevents data files from being stored in "Program files" so if the executable happens to be there (and I recommend that it should be) the Start in must point somewhere else.

patonb's recommendation is to move EVERYTHING out to some other place so that a shortcut to the executable and the path to the data files point to the same place. That is one option that works.

Microsoft recommends that programs store their working data files in a folder inside of a hidden location called %APPDAT%. The v6 installers do i that way. Type %APPDATA% (including the % signs) into the Run box and it will open the hidden location. You'll probably recognize the name of a directory for FAH where one copy of the data files may already be.

%APPDATA% is a system variable which is defined differently on different versions of Windows so I'm not spelling out the entire path for you, but you can place that path in the Start in field -- or you can make up your own convention as long as you point to a directory that has read/write permissions.

Some AntiVirus programs have caused a few problems. I don't recall any with NortonAV but Norton360 has blocked FAH. I don't run either one now. Many people add an exception in their AV program for FAH's files but it's up to you.

It took a few times to read through that for understanding, but I think I have it now. Thanks a lot for taking the time to spell this stuff out. This is my first experience using Win7, so it's a bit of a trial by fire.

Okay, I gave it another go, and managed to find a pictoral help page on how to change the short cuts. I'm very visual, so it worked very well for me. As you can see in the log, I was able to change the location of folder.

Now it seems to be running into a new problem. I installed the newest nVidia driver, 266.58 and the newest CUDA package, 263.06, and they seem to replace the other one when I install a second one. The way I understood the instructions, I needed both of them, so I'm confused about why they seem to wipe out the old one.

After getting a message about missing the "cudart.dll" file, I downloaded and copied that into place as others recommended (as found via google), but now it complains about
"The procedue entry point cudaHostAlloc could not be located in the dynamic link library cudart.dll" in a window that itself is called "FahCore_15.exe - Entry Point Not Found"

I'm not sure if I got a partial file with the cudart.dll file, but that's what several others recommended as a fix to the previous message saying "cudart.dll is missing"

I even tried running it as an Administrator and moved the folder to the desktop (thinking perhaps all of C: was read/write blocked, I still got the stupid IO error after putting the cudart.dll files in the folder).

With client not running, delete the work folder, queue.dat file, and unitinfo.txt file. Start client. Same error?

Add -forcegpu nvidia_g80 switch to shortcut, repeat the delete. Same error?

After trying the first suggestion and deleting the files, it still has the edrfile hash fail and the IO error, which seems (afaik) to be the same problem as in my first log file.

I'm left scratching my head as to why it can't find the file (cudart.dll), it's in the right folder, I'm assuming, in the Start In file path folder, and there's another instance of it in the %APPDATA% folder. Hmm..

Okay, I just noticed this, after adding the -forcegpu bit, the directory changed (in the second log file) to C:\Windows, although I haven't changed the short cut directory, it's still:
"C:\Folding@home-gpu -forcegpu nvidia_g80"
And it includes the quotes (it must have added them, I didn't).

Ugh, I'm writing this as I'm working on it.. sorry, this is terribly long. I added the files that it wanted to the C:\Windows folder since it apparently wanted them in there after adding the -forcegpu tag. Now it's back to the edrfile stuff, and it has this log (I'm guessing it's the same as the others).

I feel like I'm running in circles here. I'm running it in administrator mode (as accessed through right clicking on the icon and addressing it in the pannel), but it doesn't seem to help. There's no way that the IO error is a hard-drive failure, both computers are brand new, barely a few months old.

After looking things over, consulting the GPU installation guide on the main site, I started wondering if my Target path is wrong for the icon. The icon in the Start Menu itself seems to be a shortcut (acceptable?), but the Target path isn't editable, it's greyed out..

Yes... the -forcegpu sjhould be up in the target not in the start in.

Argh! Really getting mad at Win7 here. The Target path is grayed out, so I can't edit it to add the -forcegpu. I made a new one, so that I could edit it, and then the Apply button is grayed out, so I can't save it. I click OK and that wasn't good enough because now it's reverted to how the old one looked and grayed out the Target box. What am I to do?

Okay, I tried it again and for some reason it let me edit the Target line this time. The new argument showed up in the log file, but still has the edrfile problems...

I didn't install the CUDA package like you did, just the latest Nvidia drivers. I believe all the recent drivers have the CUDA files needed to run F@H without needing to install the separate CUDA package.

I was wondering if the newer ones had all of the bases covered. Currently I have the 263.06 driver on the computer I'm troubleshooting, but still no dice.
