Unfortunately, no "one" client will utilise your machine to the max!

With your machine, for maximum PPD, I would run one GPU client and two SMPs.

Two SMPs will give you more PPD (instead of one), but is higher maintenance. You need to be carefull in your shutdown procedures in order not to loose both WUs. And, the project team does not like it because they value speed.

See http://fahwiki.net/index.php/FAH_%26_SM ... le_Clients for installing multiple clients. General procedure is the same whether it's 4 x CPU or SMP + GPU or any other combination of clients. Use the Console version of each client for best results.

You might want to start with 4xCPU plus 1 GPU client. Then when you're comfortable with the process, replace the 4 CPU clients with a single SMP client. In the process you'll find out how to use the -configonly switch to reconfigure the clients and the -oneunit switch to prevent the CPU clients from starting another work unit when you're ready to switch to SMP.

As Mactin alluded, running 2xSMP on a quad-core system is neither recommended nor supported.

VM Player with ubuntu running 1 SMP client on 4 cores, and the Windows GPU2 client. Set the VM to run as idle, and the GPU to run at low or slightly elevated.

Follow the GPU install guide on the Stanford project page. Then Google the rest.

I have a dual Xeon 5580 (8 cores - 16 threads) setup with an ATI Radeon 4870. Is there any way I can get F@H to make use of all that power? Currently F@H only seems to use about 5% - 10% of my CPU - running on maybe 7 threads at most. Heck - 8 of my threads are "parked."

Feature Idea: have some sort of turbo mode where F@H can just go wild and fully utilize the system. This would be good for times when you know you are not really going to be using your system for a while, or you just want to see how much you can load your system. It should be easy to go in and out of turbo mode.

Cheers, Eric

Check out the BigAdv forum for the details.

The clients already utilize 100% of available resources... at least theoretically. The uniprocessor client fully loads one core, but based on its design it can't use anything else. The a1 core on the SMP client doesn't fully tax the CPU, but due to improvements in coding the a2 core does. The a2 core only works in Linux/OSX, but the new SMP core that's coming out sometime in the near future should go max speed on all operating systems. The GPU client works separately from the CPU clients, but it does fully utilize the graphics card assuming you don't tell it to run slower.

I dont want the smp because i do not want to have to create a password for my windows logon as no other user uses this machine. also what is a cpu client? i looked over all the high and low performance clients but couldnt find one... sorry for the extra post

If the password is the only thing holding you back from trying the SMP client, there is a "trick" that lets you set up your password Admin account for the client, but will log you in automatically. You'll never see the login screen after you do it.

CPU client is the first one, well, two, listed. The 6.23 Systray or console client.

CPU client is slow compared to the SMP client.

Add a password, and then set windows to automatically login. Same as not having to type a password, and then you can run the SMP client.

What about running VM linux like Notfred? i'm running Win7 with UAC diabled set to auto-log in my account with my corei7 sitting at 100% while folding.

No knowledge of linux is required with notfred. its literally as easy as download, and run. you only have to download the free VM Player, Download Notfreds VM image, launch, configure, restart and you're set. you would only have to configure it twice because you are running 16 cores where the latest VM Player supports 8.

VMs are great for a 2nd best client. Native linux folds a little faster right now.
