Same here. I finally get a BA assignment and get instead endless File IO errors.

512 Bytes download appears to be associated with the problem. (Edited to correct error)

Actually, that's 512 BYTES, not MBytes. That seems to be a signature of the bad WUs on the server (should be ~25 Mbytes download for a p6900). Compare this with the download for my current p6942 SMP WU - 1,766,140 ( added the commas to make the size clear)

After watching two of my folders download and dump for about an hour, I took the -bigadv flag off so they could get work. I guess this isn't a big deal to some since these i7's aren't going to be eligible for -bigadv soon anyway. :(

I also had a rapid string of 10 of these just now (20:58 GMT Nov 11 2011) until I Ctrl-C'ed the v6 console client and removed the bigadv flag. I had set it when I saw the server was "uniced" again with some inventory of WUs.

Back on the "normal" SMP WUs, a p6981 to be exact.

The good news, points wise, is that I'm getting about the same PPD as when I folded the infamous p2684s.

To digress a bit, I see that the Psummary page doesn't have the p2684 listed any more. P 6900-6904 are still there.

Did the p2684 project come to a conclusion? Are there any even preliminary results available from the researchers?

Good observation, GW. I'm attempting to find somebody who can fix it.

I doubt that you're correct in concluding that the server has bad WUs. My assumption is that the server has no WUs at all. The 512byte message isn't a WU at all but rather whatever the WS does when your client asks for work but there's none to give.

Under normal circumstances this never happens. The AS is supposed to know when a WS is out of work and it's supposed to redirect requests for new WUs to a different WS. Probably the AS has something wrong with it. The information on serverstat is inconsistent.

If you want BA work and you're not getting it, I expect that removing the -bigadv setting will at least give you a standard assignment, but some people might not be willing to do that. ('m not ADVOCATING that change .... just SUGGESTING. The choice is up to you.)

Re: Problems receiving work from 130.237.232.141

We had a downtime a little while ago; I think some jobs got introduced into the server system that don't have corresponding work unit files. I think that's what causes the FILE_IO_ERROR on start. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a reliable way to clear the jobs. Fortunately, the server itself clears the jobs after trying them a few times. But it can cause these "false starts" that you see.

This was from Dr. Kasson (near the top of the current forum page in the same thread on 130.237.232.141) from a couple of weeks ago. This is the server in Sweden we are dealing with. I guess it must be a pretty nasty situation that has persisted over the last few weeks.

Yes, I remembered that post when I wrote what I did. As you point out, it has been a couple of weeks so I'm assuming he has dealt with that issue and we're looking at something different, though I don't know any more about it than you do. I do see some STRANGE information on serverstat, which is what lead me to my suppositions.

Sorry, lack of attention to detail (or bad eyes):

the server is 130.237.165.141, not 130.237.232.141

PS we put this server back on assign for a brief period this morning. Clients seemed to be erroring out with the FILE_IO_ERROR (as best it appears from the server side), so we took it back off pending a longer-term fix.
