Re: Total work not showing up
I thought I might try a different route to Version 8. I thought the problem might be browser related. My default browser is Firefox because it has many tools I use for my blog, but O.K., try I different browser.
I stopped the work in Version 7.
I opened Chrome and made it the default so that the .exe would go there and installed Version 8. I did not get very far because Version 8 would not accept my GPU.
FAH is probably the most successful Citizen Science entity ever created, even more successful in its totality than BOINC. But Version 8 suffers from difficulties like the ones I had.
If FAH still wants to add to its installed base of users the engineers need to do two things:
1. Flatten out the install so it is as easy as the install for Version 7.
2. Allow the use of any and all GPU's, because GPU's are the only advantage of Version8 over Version 7.
Also, FAH, and BOINC also, need to come up with formulations that can run on laptops and tablets because they now dominate the computer market [you can easily check the statistics with a Google search. I did this before making this suggestion].
I am crunching on Version 7 and would love to be able to use Version 8, but I cannot use it in its present form.
I repeat from one of my earlier posts, there are many non-scientists who are simple folk and want to contribute but are not terribly computer savvy.
They need things to just work.
I must say, I did get a tremendous amount of help from the forum people, even though the adventure was a failure, and I do appreciate all of the help.

Re: Total work not showing up
You really need to work on your skill to provide information for us to help you. Fahclient v8 is as easy to install and set up as it can be.
You keep saying that v8 is not folding - show us with screenshots, how it is not folding.
You are saying it is not seeing your GPU, show us, where you think it is not seeing your GPU. It is one thing to get confused about certain things, it is another to come here and give us the most abstract and most generic "doesn't work" information.
There are very good reasons on why v8 does not just start folding as soon as you install, and those reasons are to help science and not harm it. If it means that user has to click few icons and set up few things, so be it. Developer simply cannot design software, which simulates biochemical processes, to cater people who are not wiling to put in a little bit of effort to get it working and not just go: It doesn't work, I'm deleting it.
Now, you are trying to fold on Win 11 system with some sort of 16 thread Intel CPU, which has integrated graphics, and you have nVidia T1000.
From your posts I see that Fahclient v8 selected 15 threads out of 16. That is correct, and those resources should fold, if you are connected to normal internet without any crazy network firewalls or set up. Your integrated intel graphics is useless in FAH, and it will not get any work. Your nVidia T1000 GPU is very low end, and will rarely get any work. And from one of your posts, T1000 was recognized and ticked by fahclient v8.
So from all of that your CPU should be getting work. Clicking on Log icon on the main v8 page, can reveal more information on what is going on with your folding

Re: Total work not showing up
Well, I cannot even contemplate answering all of your criticisms.
The most important thing you said was that even if I succeeded in setting up Version 8 and had my Nvidia T1000 GPU recognized it is very low end and would get little work.
So, since Version 7 is working well and I would get little more out of Version 8, I will just stay where I am.
Thanks.

Re: Total work not showing up
It was not a criticism.
Also, you mentioned that v7 also does not see your GPU. And with v8 CPU folds without a fault. But if v7 is working for you, there is no need to move to v8

Re: Total work not showing up
From The FAH Wikipedia article:
"Folding@home attracts participants who are computer hardware enthusiasts. These groups bring considerable expertise to the project and are able to build computers with advanced processing power...Furthermore, many participants work in computer and technology-based jobs and careers."
Most people are not "computer hardware enthusiasts", cannot "build computers with advanced processing power" and do not work "in computer and technology-based jobs and careers", but many of us who are not scientists or computer "enthusiasts"would welcome the opportunity to participate in scientific research.
"By January 2020, the number of users was down to 30,000. However, it is difficult to ascertain what proportion of participants are hardware enthusiasts. Although, according to the project managers, the contribution of the enthusiast community is substantially larger in terms of processing power."
I do not know nor can I find how large the FAH community has been in the past. But making FAH more appealing to the general public might help reverse this downward trend.
The work being done by organizations like FAH and BOINC is very important, has resulted in the publication of many science papers, and has helped to move scientific research forward. Here are several examples of work in which I participated:
I participated in a BOINC project, "Help Defeat Cancer" from the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, a part of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
The project was led by Dr. David Foran. The result was to reduce tissue typing on one computer from 137 years to 1 day. I was very proud to have contributed to this project.
Another BOINC project in which I participated was "Nutritious Rice for the World", from the University of Washington which resulted in new strains of this food staple being developed.
Along with FAH I also currently contribute to four projects running on BOINC. One such project is Rosetta@home from the University of Washington's Institute for Protein Design. The leader of this effort, Dr. David Baker, was just a winner of the Nobel Prize. I am proud to be contributing to this work.
Another project in which I participate is "Einstein@home" from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (DE) and the University of Wisconsin- Madison which has just published results of a search for supernova remnants using data from the Caltech/MIT aLIGO Observatory.
I also participate in MilkyWay@home from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
At FAH I am participating in "Any disease", but I have no idea what projects on which my computer is currently participating.
There is nothing special about me and there are millions of people like me who could be attracted to FAH if it is as simple as you say.
Would it not be nice to see that number of 30,000 increased in a meaningful way?

Re: Total work not showing up
Here is my current standing at BOINC. Most of this work was done in a previous period using a $5000 water cooled gaming computer with twin GPU's from Maingear. Those earlier results totaled over 36 million credits out of the current 44 million credits.

Re: Total work not showing up
FAH has been and still is the largest distributed computing project in the world.
During COVID, project surpassed Exaflop mark. It was featured in BBC and other news outlets, talked about in AMD, nVidia and Intel keynotes in multiple events. There was massive exposure to the project worldwide, to the point where servers simply could not keep up, even when we managed to get help from cloud providers.
Biggest issue with the project is not how easy or how hard it is to install and set up the software (it is not hard by any means), but the cost of electricity.
After COVID, majority of people quit folding not because suddenly they were unable to set up a client, but because their electricity bills came in, and they had to shut the folding down because it was too expensive. Now electricity is not getting cheaper, so issue remains.
With v8 knowing what project you are currently running cannot be easier. Unless person cannot read in English. Then it is completely understandable, but I believe there are translations to other languages available.
Regardless of all this, it is expected that at least basic ability to read and query thing or two is required while using any software.
