I do not think that I ever set up a pass key when I was originally running Version 7.

passkey is just for people who count every point they earn. If you didn't have it, you don't really need it.

Thanks. That is what I thought.

I do have a question. I have gone back to Version 7 because I could not satisfy the requirements for Version 8 due to my own limitations. In Version 7, I do not see that I am using my GPU, just 15 CPU's. Should I not also see usage of my GPU?

Thanks.

I think I just found the problem for my installation of Version 8. The email I was to get to confirm my email address went into my Junk file, something which has never ever previously occurred and I never looked there for it. So, I would like to again try in install Version 8.

Version 7 is running in a very satisfactory way. If I try to install Version 8, do I need to remove Version 7 or can I keep it?

Would version 8 use my GPU?

Would Version 8 do anything in processing that is an advantage over Version 7?

With BOINC, we were advised not to run on a laptop or tablet because of heat and possible damage to the CPU. Can FAH run on a laptop with no danger of damage? I have two laptops available.

Thanks.

V8 will replace V7 for you.
V8 does everything v7 does (and more) just in a different UI.
Running any high intensity workload on laptops or handheld devices is as risky as a user running on it can allow. Monitoring system temperatures is vital in every high compute tasks. Well maintained system can fold and do other things for many years

V8 will not adopt unfinished v7 work.
Please finish and pause before upgrading.

You do not need to remove the v7 client. Just set any WUs to Finish and install after they finish and upload. Unfortunately the install of v8 will not continue WUs downloaded by the v7 client. Many settings such as username and passkey will be imported from the v7 config.xml file, but not all.

v8 should use your GPU if the full video drivers from AMD or Nvidia are installed and the GPU is supported by F@h. The drivers that MS installs using Windows Update usually do not include OpenCL or CUDA support which is required for folding.

Folding can work on a laptop if it has a well cooled design. You can partly control the heat by using fewer CPU cores. I do know that I ran folding for over half a dozen years on my previous MacBook Pro without problems. Though now that it is over 8 years old I do need to replace the cooling fan and possibly the thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink.

I would think the fans and battery are the weakest points for a laptop folding.

Long ago I had a PowerBook g4 plugged in and folding most of the time. It was on a cooling stand but I don’t think the battery was happy plugged in at 100% so much.

Current model MacBooks can go into a desktop mode where they leave the battery at an 80% charge. That stresses the battery less. But cooler is better.

I ran the install for Version 8 and got as far as "Verify your email address", which did not tell me that an email would be coming for me to verify my email address and I have not gotten the email requesting me to do the verification, so I cannot finish the setup. Will the email come? If so, how long should I have to wait for it.

It should come within a couple minutes.
Some email providers block it.
I use a gmail address.

It has been over 1 hour, no email to confirm my email address. I am just going to go back to Version 7 which does not have all of this.

So I went back to Version 7 and it started to work immediately. I did put in my identity. No muss, no fuss. That is how it should be.
