Thanks. The install is taking a very long time. As of this morning it has reached 66.7%. I started immediately after my last reply to you. Just now
showing 66.8%, so it is definitely installing.

Are you installing it on Intel Pentium 3?

Fahclient installation takes seconds, not days

The version 8 install completed, but I saw nothing of any work, so I have uninstalled. I never saw a passphrase or anything like it. This should not be so complex.

I am really unhappy that I removed version 7 because it was at least working.

So, I am no longer connected in any way to FAH.

I will be happy to try again if I can get good instructions including how I get a passphrase and whatever else I need to get this to work.

Did you actually read the guide?
You download a client, install it, launch it, web browser opens the log in window. Create a new account with your own password, which some call it passphrase, link your computer to that account, go into Account settings, enter your passkey, start folding.

O.K., I read the guide and went to the link for Version 8 and saved it and did the install. I chose my user name and pass phrase. Then I went to Login, entered my user name and pass phrase and attempted to log in. I got a message which says "Account not active Please verify your email to activate your account and clicked on Ok.
I got a FAH page which showed Machines 1 CPU's 0 GPUs PPD 0. clicked on Fold All and saw Desktop-SAGI... v8.4.9 15CPUs. NVIDIA T1000 Unlinked
I clicked on Settings and got a page which started with DESKTOP-SAGIH20 Acccount settings with my user name filled in, Team 0 [which is correct] Passkey blank, Cause any [correct], then Scheduling where I checked Keep Awake, then Resource Usage CPUs 15 of 16, GPUs Enabled Intel (R) UHD Graphics 750VIDIA T000 with a checked box.

But Save is grayed out.

What is next? What might I have missed?

I managed to get Save to go live so I saved my work, but I still have the same question, as that did nothing.

What have I missed?

Forget it. I went back to Version 7 which was set up in about five minutes. It is a shame that with Version 8 things got so complicated. I remembered my user name, saw my previous statistics and started to work.

I also "crunch" for four BOINC projects.

"Crunching" is a way for the non-scientist to contribute.

As you can see, I run a science blog. I cover basic and applied science at universities and science institutions all over the world. The blog is quite successful. I have over 500 direct subscribers and about 1100 who take the Facebook Fan page. Every day Wordpress gives me a list of which posts were read and by how many people; I also get a map showing me every country in which there was at least one reader. If you get a chance, check out the blog.

Thanks for all of your help. Most of us are really simple people who just want something to work.

You forgot to add your passkey from v7.
Also, if V8 set up was so complicated, you wouldn't be the only one who had issues starting folding on it. There are massive amount of people who made it work with V8, than those who haven't.
There are equal amount of people struggling with v7 as there are with V8.
Sometimes it is not a software...

I think we can agree it can be simpler.
Knowing exactly what threw someone off would be helpful.

Indeed, problem explanation is the biggest problem here :)

Getting and setting a passkey before creating an account would help avoid some confusion.

But maybe the points were not a priority here.
My wrong assumption was that user needs bonus points instead of things just working :)

Even if you don't care about points, people are confused by passkey and password managers put junk in there because it didn't autofill with a pre-existing value.

Is there a way for webpage to not push suggestion to password managers to save it? Maybe it would be good idea to enforce that in web ui

Maybe by not making the field content hidden? (I think it is input class="password")
Might also need to internally use a different field name.

Completely hiding it from user could be a win.
