Sometimes creative routing options to help the GPU get more air can be done as well.
what options ?
With passively cooled GPUs I have seen people cable tie case fans on or close to the heatsink either in a push or pull configuration depending on what more effective with the airflow directions. I would also check that your CPU cooler is not blowing over the GPU heatsink, or in a way that causes the hot air to be circulated within the case rather than ejected. As mentioned by BobWilliams757 cables and slots can really make a huge difference to air flow, as can the 'out' fan configuration of the case, most by default push out the back but that not always the best direction depending on the case location. Other thoughts: a dust off of the fans and heat sinks never goes amiss.

With the closed door, the temperature is 75-76 °C.
If I take off the case door, then surprisingly the temperature is 73-74 °C.
I am going to test using slot cover as this one

For a passive cooled GT 1030 I get this output from nvidia-smi:
Code: Select all
Temperature
GPU Current Temp : 74 C
GPU Shutdown Temp : 102 C
GPU Slowdown Temp : 99 C
GPU Max Operating Temp : N/A
GPU Target Temperature : 83 C
Memory Current Temp : N/A
Memory Max Operating Temp : N/A
Power Readings
Power Management : Supported
Power Draw : N/A
Power Limit : 30.00 W
Default Power Limit : 30.00 W
Enforced Power Limit : 30.00 W
Min Power Limit : 25.50 W
Max Power Limit : 30.00 W
I'm not worried at all about the temperature. That is while running a p18717 by the way, which will finish about 6h before timeout. I wouldn't want to slow it down.

@floyd
with what option of nvidia-smi you get such info ?
thanks

@floyd
Certainly air flow in the case is a bad one.

I use cpulimit then fah uses only 70 % of the CPU power else the temperature is about 80 °C.

nvidia-smi -q -d TEMPERATURE,PERFORMANCE
My output was cut from nvidia-smi -q which I thought included all info available but now I see that nvidia-smi -q -d TEMPERATURE,POWER gives a little extra output.

Well the computer is in the living room and I want it quiet there. Hence the 1030, that's the best you can get with passive cooling. And the case fans are tuned down. Still the temperatures are okay. I had a passive 6600GT long ago which ran close to 100 C no problem, just made sure that no cables touched the heat sink.

After several days, the result.
There is only a delay problem with Project 18717. One day is missing in the delay for computing. If one day is added to the delay then a gt 1030 can help the project.

I replaced three slot covers with a slot cover with grid.
Now the temperature of the GPU is 68-71 °C instead of 71-74 °C.
With limiting the power (dedicated to FAH) to 75 % and three slot covers with grid, then the temperature decreased from 78-82 °C to 68-71 °C, a decrease of 10-11°C.
Wait and see till this summer.
