An RTX GPU needs a PCIE 3.0 x8 slot under Windows, and an X4 slot under Linux.
A top of the line GPU (RTX 3090, and 3080Ti) will need an X8 slot under Linux, and X16 slot under Windows. The bottleneck is probably around an X10-X12 slot speed, which such a slot doesn't exist.

An X1 slot even slows down a GTX 1050, and may be ok for a GT 1030 or less.
Ideally you don't want to fold on such low end GPUs.

I recently just set up a ‘mining’ rack but using an EVGA X99 that i got from EVGA’s B-Stock sales. With the 40 Lane PCIe 5960X ($90 from EBay) it can run the (5) 3.0 x16 slots in x8 mode. So far I only have 3 GPU’s on it (3060ti, 3060ti, 3060), but it seems to be doing very well.

The EVGA X99 FTW isn't really a "mining" board, but it indeed looks like a very good board for multi-GPU.

@bourbonbelly so, who is the candidate?

You are correct, it is not a mining board, but it’s installed on a “mining rack” with pcie 3.0x16 risers to each card. So far still only running 3 3060’s on it, but the PPD is right where they are supposed to be. Just need to get 2 more…. In time.

But yeah, the X99 that i stumbled across is working great as long as I don’t go crazy and try putting a 3080+ on it… Curious how if it might work though…
