Day after day, boots notwithstanding, I get:

Code: Select all

I'm going to merge this post into an existing discussion of the same topic.

Move the slider to "full" or alter the number of CPUs from whatever it is (probably -1) to 2.

The quantity of WUs for single-CPU configurations is limited and too many people have configurations that limit their assignments to one CPU. New WUs are being added but they get assigned quickly and we're back to the same situation again. Modify your configuration to use two or more CPUs.

Or upgrade the system to have more than 1 CPU core available for folding.

Adam, this one core issue has a similar symptom, and a similar cause (shortage of work units fitting your system's configuration) but a 1 core system not getting work is not the same as an your 4c8t system not getting work. As already posted the topic you started, your solution is to change the CPU count to something other than -1 which equates to either 7 or 8 depending on your system (with GPU or without).

Change the -1 to a 6, and you should get work.

Or create another CPU slot, and then configure each slot to use 4 cores (again, assuming no GPU running). That will keep a steady supply of WUs coming in for a long time.

I'm using all four of my cores and all eight of my Logical Processors (two per core) to process folding. I have "Folding Power" set to "Full". I have only one Intel CPU. I don't know what other setting I can change, and the problem continues. Is there some option/setting in the FAHControl, Configuration, or Preferences I can change? I have the CPU threads set to -1 which lets the client choose. Thanks for any advice/information you can give.
The automatic configuration for an 8-thread system chooses 7 threads, leaving one for GPU support. If you have GPU folding on that PC, set CPU:6. If not, set CPU:8. While 7-thread WUs are currently not available (or at least very rare), both 6 and 8 should be easily available.

Doesn't the "Default" -1 setting give you anything that is available, or is there some sort of software problem that CPU: 6 will solve? Thanks!
AIUI CPU:-1 uses all the threads available, but leaves one for feeding GPUs (I may be wrong, but I don't think it realises that reserving one is not needed if there is no GPU slot).
However the AS will only issue a WU that matches the number of available threads. It is not an upper limit. So CPU:6 will allow (only) WUs for six threads, while CPU:-1 on an eight-core system with a GPU will request WUs for 7 threads. Many projects don't allow 7, so few WUs are available with that setting. OTOH six-processor WUs are easily available at present.

Actually the CPU:-1 setting tells the cleint to base the usage of cores on the slider position of Light, Medium or Full. Reserving a core for a GPU slot is separate, and depends on whether a usable GPU is seen as available at configuration time. The setting of Light uses half the cores, Medium all but one of the available cores, and Full uses all available cores.

Until the projects come back to full assignment with the replacement WS coming online, either use the Medium slider setting or manually set the CPU count to 6. Medium on your system will use 6 cores. A CPU core setting of 7 usually works, and should work again once projects with WU's that can successfully process at that setting are available again in quantity.

The WS that was in the process of being replaced is online - viewtopic.php?f=24&t=28522&p=282820#p282820. You can try the default which results in a CPU:7 setting, I don't recall whether the projects on this server will use 7 cores or not. But it being online should reduce the demand for WU's on other WS's which might have work for CPU:7.
