100,000 points per day folding beast
Fellow folder and the well informed. When do you think we are going to be able to have a 100,000 points per day monster in a single desktop case?
As a point of reference, does any one out there have a top of the range I7/Xeon system and 3 to 4 GTX 280’s?

Re: 100,000 points per day folding beast
Its going to be a bit and probably not with this generation of cards.
My max out of my "Fastra" box was ~47k PpD.
But that was running the small/fast test protiens on v1.18.
Now with this mix of bigger/slower protiens and v1.19, I'm only doing ~39.5k PpD.
Luck............

You have to wonder how 4 of these things in a box would do: http://en.expreview.com/2008/12/09/gefo ... es-09.html

We will have to wait and see what the temps are like. Though 8 gpus and an I7. hehehe. only hope i'm in a job to beable to buy one next year.

How big is your desk?
A good GPU only design can get you 50 ppd/w. 100,000 ppd will draw 2000 watts with a nicely designed GPU only box if you can figure out how to stick the equivalent of 10-12 9800gx2's on your desktop.
A good CPU only design can get you 20 ppd/w. 100,000 ppd will draw 5000 watts if you can figure out how to stick 50 quad core processors on your desktop.
That's a lot of heat to get rid of..

We need a few generations of Moore's Law.

Current best seems to be 4x 9800GX2's for 40-50k PPD, depending upon the projects you receive.
ASRock X99 WS i7-5930K @ 4.4GHz /2x GTX 970 @ 1.46GHz /4x4GB DDR4-2666
Phenom II X6 @ 3.7GHz /2x2GB DDR3-1680 /GTX 970 @ 1.40GHz
450-600K PPD @ ~850W

Re: 100,000 points per day folding beast
I'll be investing in GPU folding technology when power usage comes down by a fair bit. I know that running my 2 PS3s at the moment at about ~125W each isn't really good PpDpW.. but its the total wattage i'm really worried about. I wouldn't like to have a 24/7 computer drawing any more than 300W.
Cheers

The trick with GPU folding to Maximize your PpDpW is to use a low wattage CPU to drive multiple nVidia GPU clients.smASHer88 wrote:I'll be investing in GPU folding technology when power usage comes down by a fair bit. That minimizes the hardware overhead.
For 300 watts used you should be able to get over 10,000 PpD.

Re: 100,000 points per day folding beast
If the new nVidia GTX295 (2x 240 Shaders) was a single-card (sadly it's not a singlePCB like the 4870X2, but a DualPCB), it would be possible! A GTX280 (240 shaders) can make about 8K PPD, so a GTX295 should be able to make 16K+ and if you install 6 in a ASUS P6T6 (Core i7 with 6x PCIe x16 slot), you should get 6x2x8K = 96K PPD, so with a bit overclocking you should be able to make a 100,000 PPD-beast!!
Re: 100,000 points per day folding beast
I would expect the GTX280 to get 6 - 7,000 PPD with the larger proteins.
Lets see. one Mountain mods duality case, a pair of P6T6 WS Revolution MBs with Intel i7, an even dozen of BFGEGTX2801024H2OWEs, two or three pumps & radiators, LOTS of power. (and money)
At 7,000 PPD/card, thats 84,000 PPD.
Definitely a monster, although it might be stretching the definition of a 'single desktop case.'

Re: 100,000 points per day folding beast
But the slots on the P6T6 are all single width.
So you'd be limited to 3 double width cards.
The K9A2 Plat will still take 4 double width cards.
To max a single box out you will need to find a WATX board which has the max number of x8 or x16 PCI-E slots in the right place.
Then you could fit 5 double width cards.

No. With watercooling the GTX 280s are single slot (as the BFG cards he mentioned).Tigerbiten wrote:But the slots on the P6T6 are all single width.
