Points per day on laptops

Hi Everyone,

Time for a bit of fun. Just wondering how many of you out there are folding on a laptop like me, and how many points per day you are managing to get. Also, this will give me an idea of how well my laptop is folding compared to others.

I'll start us off.

My specs are as follows:

I'm using an HP Compaq laptop 2.0GHz, 2GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M graphics card, and I fold for about 9-10 hours a day with non-folding days every now and then. I'm folding using 1 core out of the 2 @ 90% CPU usage, and FahSpy shows i'm folding @ 135 PPD with the CPU whirring along @ 50 degs C.

I'm folding more or less 24/7 with my MacBook (1,83Ghz C2D, 2GB RAM). Using the SMP client I'm getting 1000 - 1400 PPD, depends on the WU.

Put me down for folding 24/7 on an HP Lappy with an AMD Turion TL-56 @ 1.8Ghz in Linux, Ubuntu 8.04. SMP folding gets 600-1200 depending on the work unit. The newer A2 cores get the 1200.

How are you managing to get 600-1200 ppd Karamiekos, it must be because you're using Linux and the SMP client. As I said in my original post, FahSpy is saying I'm crunching 130 pts a day.

300PPD on average (lots of variation, depending on core [Amber, Double Gromacs...] used) with a P-M at 1.8 GHz and 1.5 GB RAM (IBM T-42).

Currently getting 230 PPD on my Dell Inspiron 1501 (Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3500+ 1.8Ghz) running 24/7. The video card is only an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150, so I have to settle for the 6.20 Uniprocessor.

~1000PPD running the SMP client (XP-32, SP-3) on a Lenovo T60p (2GHz merom). I tried running two, which would have yielded ~1150PPD if the clients were properly isolated.

I've tried x86 tray client on Centrino T2300 (1.66 GHz, 2 cores) and the result is 75 PPD per core on project 2170. I haven't tried SMP because the laptop is not mine and didn't have time. The temperature goes up to 70C (room temperature 30C).

I used to fold a lot with my old 2.2 GHz P4-M notebook a while back and got between 70 on Ambers and about 250 ppd on the old SSE2 DGromacs (usually about 100-150 ppd on Gromacs and Gromacs33.) I have test-folded with my 1.06 GHz C2D U7500 notebook and it gets a maximum of about 600 ppd on 2605s, which is not bad for that slow of a chip and that little memory bandwidth (533 MHz FSB.) However, I use it as an actual laptop and not a dedicated folder and more than 10 hours or so of not folding at full speed means it misses deadlines.

The two downsides to folding on a laptop is that almost all of them have poor cooling and you typically want to move them around and use them on battery. Running a CPU at 100% on battery kills battery life quickly and pretty much contraindicates folding. The old P4-M unit idled at 60-65 C with no load and a 1.2 GHz/1.2 Vcore, so when it was folding and at the full 2.2 GHz/1.3 Vcore, it got to about 75-80 C and made some serious noise and heat. My new 1.06 C2D unit idles at a much more reasonable 38-40 C at 800 MHz/850 mV but it gets to about 60 C at the full 1.06 GHz/875 mV and the fan starts a-screaming too. You certainly don't want to have the fan screaming during class or a meeting. About the only laptop that I have ever used that has good cooling is my wife's Dell Latitude D531. Much of that is because she has the 65 nm Mobile Sempron 3600+, which is rated at 25 watts versus the typical Turion 64 X2s rated at 31-35 W that use the exact same fan and heatsink. So I pretty much stick to using desktops as they have much better cooling, they are far quieter, and I can leave them on 24/7.

My fan makes a bit of noise too, Mizzou, but it's folding at about 50 deg c on average according to CoreTemp, which I guess is pretty good compared to what I'm reading from others here. I have my laptop raised up on a sloped cooling tray when I'm at home, and I don't fold when I'm out, and it runs on the battery when I take it away from home. The fan makes a bit of noise when i'm doing something else while I'm folding, but quietens down a bit when I let it just fold. So, for the time being, I'm happy to let it fold as a low-priority task and contribute to science - gives me a warm feeling.

I'm folding on a ThinkPad T61 (2.6 GHz processor) and Intel's improvements between early Conroe and recent Merom (including, but not limited to, more cache) makes the T61 fold like it's running at about 3.2 Conroe MHz.

None of them are folding at the moment, they were in the path of Hurricane Ike.
