Some errors and no points from GPU workload

I'm running Windows 10 with a 7800X3D and 3080ti. Latest drivers (updated today manually to be 100% sure) on motherboard, chipset, GPU. GPU is undervolted, not overclocked because quite unstable (very bad luck with silicon lottery, hehe).

Whenever I fold, GPU WU don't award me any point, so I decided to clear the logs and start fresh to see what is wrong, and apparently I have some errors and questions:
How do I solve the time skew issue? I knew about this error because I checked on the forum before, but before doing this test I checked and time was synced perfectly via Windows automatic sync. To be 100% sure I also used the "Sync now" button.
The port 8080 fails and returns automatically to 80: how do I set it up to go to 80 directly?
"WARNING:WU02:FS01:FahCore returned: BAD_WORK_UNIT (114 = 0x72)" does this mean that the folding failed somehow, or what does it mean? How do I solve this?

Here's the whole log trimmed of everything between 2% and 99% as per reccomendations. I've left one line that says something about connecting to 127.0.0.1, is it because I opened the client . foldingathome . org manually and it made the connection to localhost to check data?

If your GPU or any part of your system is unstable, FAH will find the instability. It appears that after repeated failures it returned a bad work unit as failed for 18219, 3666, 1, 10 while is was work unit 02 for folding slot 01 (GPU). This work unit completed successfully for another user, so most likely an instability in your system created the excessive errors that resulted in it failing.

But you successfully completed the other work unit, 18220, 225, 0, 11, so you may have either an intermittent issue, or one was performed without the undervolt and the other wasn't.

Keep in mind it is quite possible that an assumed "stable" setting might be stable much of the time, but since each project is different it is not stable for all projects. I had one project that would frequently toss errors and sometimes fail on my gear, while all others were rock solid. Over time I figured out that it happened more often with lower power limits, and less with higher power limits. By adjusting my minimum power settings higher, I got rid of any more of them failing IIRC. They (projects) are not all the same, and some create different loads on your components which in some cases can cause errors.

My suggestion would be to remove the undervolt you are running and watch for warnings and errors. This is easy to do in advanced control, simply click on the logs tab, then check the box for warnings and errors. You can easily see them as they pop up, if they do. Also keep track of which project(s) you get errors on. If there is a trend you can be more watchful when those projects run in hopes of finding a solution.

If any work unit errors 5 times it will fail rather than going through a constant loop of retries.


As for the clock skew error, I've had it before and it corrects itself without action. But much like you, the clocks always seem to be in sync so I'm not sure of the cause.
Fold them if you get them!

Besides a system sleeping, I have seen clock skew reported on a machine that had I/O stall. In this case the ribbon cable connecting the hard drive to the logic board of a laptop had gone bad, replacing the cable fixed the problem. There were reports in th system log of delayed reads and writes to the drive, and many errors recorded on the drive's SMART status of ECC errors.

Update: the issue resolved itself. All I did was re-syncing. Was that the issue? To be completely honest, I have no clue. The issue reassorbed itself after posting here and syncing, so either the sync really did something, or the poltergeist got scared of the forum. :D

About nVidia and undervolting, replying to BobWilliams757:

Thing is, Ampere cards (series 30xx nVidia) loves to consume too much wattage for small computations, and even more for big/long ones. Undervolting makes the whole series way more stable because if you don't undervolt the card will almost always go thermal throttling after a while. Even downloading MSI Afterburner and increasing the temperature and power limit to their max is a must, else the card will start throttling down at 85°, losing about 10% of the total raw power.

I've been stress-testing Ampere cards for almost two year so far (I'm an avid overclocker and I help two shops in town with overclocking services) and all of them gave me weird artifacts and issues as soon as I pushed them a little too far on computations, rendering, and even folding whenever I didn't use undervolt. I tested with F@H, stock card with power and temperature limit raised to the max but no undervolt and no overclock: average of three errors per WU, then after five hours it started to have five errors and therefore quitting the WU. As soon as I undervolted them I could do WUs for the same projects and they went just fine with 0 errors.

I've tested three more Ampere cards (one 3070, one 3080ti, one 3060) and one of them (the 3080ti) has gold standard overclocking silicone, and they all share the same issue. Undervolting is necessary on series 30xx. Overclocking stability depends on silicone and, as usual, on overclocking quality. F@H is a very fine tuned test for high overclocking, I agree.

About Ada Lovelace (series 40xx), I didn't test any card of this series on folding, but they share the necessity of undervolting in every other aspect. They are somewhat better on dealing with thermal throttling, but they still waste tons of electricity and generate too much heat for themselves, so I'd advise anyone to undervolt them.

And of course, do it at your own risk, do it only if you know what you're doing, do it if you're sure about it, do it because you read proper guides and understood the idea behind overclocking, undervolting, and everything. Do not try to go past the limits of your GPU, CPU, motherboard, cooling system, and always make sure to know when you're voiding your warranty (or not :D).

My folding setup previously had RTX 3050, 2x 3060, 3060 Ti, 3070 and 3070 Ti at various times. I never saw errors with stock clock and voltage. They also never thermal throttled, even at full power limit. You can get the GPU clock to boost a little higher with the fan speed increased.

Same story for my current RTX 4060 Ti, 4070 Super and 2x 4070 Ti. They are actually dramatically more efficient than all previous generations.

Overclocking is generally not recommended for folding. It only gives a couple percent more performance but a major increase in heat and power use. Some people are fanatical about efficiency and reduce the power limit or GPU clock to save power.

Folders who are serious about maximum performance use Linux rather than Windows. There is no undervolting currently supported on Linux. My own comparison of the same exact machine with Windows 10 vs. Linux showed about 6M PPD on Windows vs. 7M PPD on Linux.

I've had it happen on a desktop, and never figured out why the clock skew error took place. I noticed it due to reporting abnormal PPD and the clock skew was what caused it. I had looked for errors or other anomalies in the logs and saw the clock skew error. On the next frame after the clock adjustment, PPD went back to normal.

No sleep, hibernation, I/O errors or anything else I could find when digging.
Fold them if you get them!
