I looked up the word bastet and found "Egyptian cat goddess". I'm sure that's not the meaning here. What is it?

That is exactly the meaning meant - https://foldingathome.org/foldinghome-v8-client-guide/.
We are excited to announce version 8 of the Folding@home software. V8 has been code named “Bastet” in reference to the Ancient Egyptian goddess who is associated with cats and protection from disease.

Re: What is a bastet?
OH! Good idea. I didn't realise it was version name. I also didn't realise we were curing diseases in cats!
Re: What is a bastet?
I always thought that goddess was "Bast", apparently either name is acceptable.

Re: What is a bastet?
Probably either different accents/pronounciations (people probably weren't so precise back then), or it's similar to "motor car" and "car", "omnibus" and "bus".

Re: What is a bastet?
Apparently they are various transliterations from the original, and according to Wikipedia varied over time as well. Bastet would be more common in the later Egyptian, the language evolved over a couple thousand years.

Re: What is a bastet?
But basically it's a cat in charge of humans. Oh dear.
