(Solved) GPU disabled

Post by dickster »

Was folding great for a while, but then the gpu stopped. It shows "gpu disabled". I've googled that and checked what I could find but with the same results. I'm running Windows 7 64bit and 476.06 64bit nvidia drivers on an EVGA 1060 6gb card.

This error usually happens when the client has network connectivity problems and can't download the GPUs.txt file. Check the internet access and maybe disable firewall restrictions on FAHClient.

But this ran for over a year with no problem. It just started this problem a couple months ago. And the cpu has no problems downloading and running work units.

The download of a new copy of GPUs.txt to update it happens about once a month. In the current client that occurs at startup, if that happens before a network connection is established you can end up with no file in place. Without it the GPU is unrecognized and the folding slot will be deleted.

One clue that this is what is happening is in your log file. At startup it is reporting the following:

Code: Select all

18:18:26: GPUs: 1
18:18:26: GPU 0: Bus:1 Slot:0 Func:0 NVIDIA:1
18:18:26: CUDA Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:6.1 Driver:11.4
18:18:26:OpenCL Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:3.0 Driver:474.6
If GPUs.txt was present "NVIDIA:1" would have been replaced by the actual type of GPU like this "[GeForce GTX 1060 6GB]" with that text read from GPUs.txt.

If it worked up for a while something in your setup may have changed just enough to have the PC not be connected to the internet by the time FAHClient is started. Either it is taking longer for the network connection to be established or the FAHClient startup is happening faster. In some cases you can change the order that login items are started or delay the client startup so it happens later in time and lets the network connection be setup first.

So, if I pause folding on the control panel then shut down my system. Restart and after it gets to the desktop I connect to the internet to verify my connection is working. I restart folding, it should download a new copy of GPUs.txt and start working again?

The default setting at installation time on Windows is for FAHClient to be started in the background once your account is logged in on your PC. This is not the same as starting folding using the Web Control or advanced FAHControl. Options are to take FAHClient off the autostart list and manually start it, or to be logged off when your PC starts up instead of auto-logging into the account at startup.

So the sequence is:

PC restart ---> account login ---> FAHClient starts (auto or manually) ---> GPUs.txt downloaded or updated once a month ---> start folding (auto or manually.

You are looking for the internet connection to be established before FAHClient is started.

does anyone have ideas about the following: I tried the above process and I still get the error, "no gpu access". This is a portion of my log file.

This did not fix it for me. My GPU is (correctly) discovered as "Hawaii PRO [R9 290/390]", which is present in the GPUs.txt file, but there is no way to re-enable it. I am trying to find a way to ensure that FAHClient starts after my internet connection is available, but your sequence is unclear about how I can set the FAHClient to start manually instead of automatically after Windows starts. I can't find an FAHClient service or regedit Run entry, so I don't know how to change this setting.

Could you please elaborate on how I can configure FAHClient to start manually on Windows 10? Thanks!

Never mind about the re-enabling, I checked the log and noticed that my cuda.dll had been removed (I had Microsoft support do unspeakable things to this PC). After reinstalling the AMD drivers FAHClient found the GPU again and it's now folding.

I am still curious about how FAHClient's startup mechanism works, though, so if you have any information on that, I would be glad to hear it. Thanks!

We would need a bit more of the log showing where the client has determined the RTX 3060 is not accessible. There may be an error or other message that helps identify the reason. This part of the log at least shows the initial checks for the card's presence appear to have worked.

Since you have an AMD GPU, the missing cuda.dll was a red herring. That is needed for folding with a Nvidia GPU, not an AMD one. Thus the message is just an informational one, not an error message. MS support may have had you update your video drivers through Windows Update, the drivers provided that way usually do not include the necessary OpenCL support libraries. Reinstalling the drivers from the package downloaded direct from AMD would include that support.

The startup for FAHClient goes pretty much as I detailed in my post on that. The main difference is that GPUs.txt is downloaded immediately the first time FAHClient is started after installation. It has been a while since I ran a Windows install, but as I recall FAHClient should show up in the account's startup items after a default install. They do it this way because MS back in the Windows 7 days blocked access to the video system for processes running as services. There is or was an option to install the client as a service, but only CPU folding can be done that way. On the default install they use a small program to run FAHClient as a windowless process, I forget the name. But using Task Manager you should see a FAHClient process.

One of the things complicating Windows running F@h and sometimes other software is a decision made back in Windows XP days. As MS added more services that were loaded at startup, people complained about the delay before they could login or see the desktop window. MS moved those to being available earlier, but there will still be background services being started. This includes establishing a network connection. So an auto logged in account starting FAHClient may not have network access that early.

The default for Linux and macOS installations creates a background service running FAHClient. GPUs.txt not being updated is not an issue for macOS, GPU folding is not supported there. But we do get some similar reports of the file not getting updated because of a lack of network connection from Linux folders. There at least it is possible to adjust the order of startup or add a delay to the FAHClient startup.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

The application executable for FAH is not under a name that would give you a hint. If you go to Task Manager>Startup the .exe file for the FAHClient is named "HideConsole". If you want Windows to start without the client starting simply disable it in Startup.
Fold them if you get them!

You'll have to post the parts of the log that are showing the error ... everything looks good in this section (although the drivers seem quite old).
