FAHCore_A7.exe has stopped working (APPCRASH)

Post by rpalri »

I've been folding on many computers. Just started an old laptop and am getting an error. As soon as I start folding, the app crashes and I get the message "FAHCore_A7.exe has stopped working"

10:11:58:WARNING:WU00:FS01:FahCore returned an unknown error code which probably indicates that it crashed
10:11:58:WARNING:WU00:FS01:FahCore returned: UNKNOWN_ENUM (20815913 = 0x13da029)

Code: Select all

Re: FAHCore_A7.exe has stopped working (APPCRASH)

Post by Joe_H »

The error is being passed through from the Windows OS, it is not directly from the F@h A7 core. As best as I can find, it may be related to AVX not being supported on your laptop properly. The original release of Windows 7 did not support AVX, that support was added in SP 1 and some hot fixes after that. Were all updates done on this laptop before MS ended support for Windows 7?

What the log does show is that the AVX version of the A7 folding core is being started. If AVX is not supported the client and server should use the SSE2 version of the A7 core, but that may not have been detected properly.

Pardon my ignorance but I'm not familiar with all these technicalities. What do you mean by AVX and SSE2? What all can I try to troubleshoot this?
I googled for the error and did some simple troubleshooting like repairing windows registry files etc. But it did not solve the problem. Could you please elaborate on the possibile solutions? I'll follow your instructions to the last point and give you feedback for further correspondence.

There is a 'style' of computers called SIMD where one instruction is performed on many data registers at once.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIMD

SSE2 is a form of SIMD introduced on the Pentium 4 in 2001, so almost all current CPUs can do SSE2. It can do four 32 bit floating point operations at once. I suspect SSE2 support is in every OS since Windows XP.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2

AVX is a much newer SIMD included in Sandy Bridge 'Core" CPUs in 2011. It can do the same floating point operation on eight 32 Bit data registers at once, so is a minimum of twice as fast as SSE2*. There are also improved instructions, so may be faster yet. As Joe_H is pointing out AVX is not supported by the base Windows 7, but support came in service packs. Windows 8 and up support AVX.

You can try to get Win 7 service packs, but Microsoft may not offer them. Upgrading to Windows 10 is a sure fire cure.

* AMD Zen and Zen+ CPUs internally do 2 micro ops to do 8 AVX registers, so the speed boost is much less. New Zen 2 CPUs are able to do all 8 at once, so get all the benefits of AVX.

As AVX uses twice as large registers than SSE2, older OS's do not save the whole registers when swapping applications. So a AVX program running on an SSE2 era OS might find half of each register with random data. Not good.

SSE2 and AVX are instructions and associated registers that have been added to the original basic x86 set of instructions implemented in the design of the processors. They are what is called SIMD, Single Instruction Multiple Data, and execute the same computer instruction on several data items at once.

SSE2 is older, and is part of the SSE family which goes from SSE to SSE4. AVX dates back about 10 years, and is generally faster and can operate on more data at once than SSE. SSE2 will work on almost every Intel or AMD CPU made the last 15-20 years, so one version of the A7 core was created to support those CPUs that do not have support for AVX.

In your case the CPU in your laptop does support AVX. However use of AVX required OS support, and Windows 7 did not include that until SP 1 was released. In addition it needs to be enabled in the Boot Configuration Data - BCD.

Now I am not a big user of Windows and have not used 7 in years, so I can just offer what I found online for setting the BCD. First check that SP1 has been loaded on your Windows 7 laptop.

Then open a Command window and enter the following:

bcdedit /set xsavedisable 0 (to Enable AVX)

or

bcdedit /set xsavedisable 1 (to Disable AVX)

I believe you have to reboot after changing the setting. I don't know if any BIOS setting changes need to be made beyond this.

As JimboPalmer finished his response before me, I will say it is a bit more detailed on the SSE/AVX info. If you can, the suggestion to go to Windows 10 is a good one. As for update downloads, not sure what MS has available since the end of extended support for Windows 7 in January.

It often feels like we are dog piling on volunteers with questions, but it is true that neither Joe_H or I spent less than 5 minutes on our reply, so neither had seen the other's approach to the question.

And in this case, we took different approaches to our description and resolution of the issue, often multiple points of view help make an issue understood.

I once learned a Lecture style tell the audience what you are going to tell them, tell them the material, then summarize them what you just told them. Having more than one helper here in the forum can have that effect.

All that is true, but the basic thing you came here for was to solve a problem and we didn't solve it yet. In simple terms, for some reason we haven't figure out yet, through no fault of your own, your computer is trying to run software that it can't run.

Joe_h wondered if you have installed the WindowsUpdate changes that are applicable to Windows 7. Let's start there.

I have unboxed the laptop after 4 years at the least. It runs Windows 7 Ultimate. It must have been updated before I put it in box, but certainly not after that. I can see on Google that SP1 was released in 2011, so I guess that must be updated. How do I check that anyways?

Press the key combination "Windows Key + Pause", that should bring up the System dialogue (otherwise via Control Panel -> System).
If top section Windows edition will include the literal "Service Pack 1" or "Service Pack 2", like so:

do a FINISH (if possible) on the FAH WU and then see what Prime95 tells you. There's an article at Tom's Hardware that explains how to test AVX and other special extenstions to the basic operations of CPUs.

Your advice worked perfectly fine! It solved the main issue. Thank you Sir!
CPU is folding perfectly fine now, although GPU is still giving errors.

It seems that your GPU is identified as an unsupported one:
Requesting new work unit for slot 01: READY gpu:0:GF106 [GeForce GT 520M] from 192.0.2.1

Can you please post the first 100 lines from the top of the log file so we can see what the fresh installation has detected?
