V7.6.9: Problem with FAHControll UI

Post by Mr_J »

Hi,
i encountered a problem with FAHControl. The program randomly closes from time to time. Also the program UI does not load or offer themes any more and is displayed only in a "basic" version. Theme files are still there but not available.

It's an option to move this windows to another Desktop/Screen.
Added by the program "Display Fusion Pro". Turning it off and on again seems to have solved the problem, but i am not entirely sure if this really was the cause or just a coincidence.
I will monitor this problem further and will test it out if it comes up again.

In Windows 10, by default, you can move the active window to another screen with
Windows Key + Shift + left/right arrow

Looks interesting. There's a beta out: https://www.displayfusion.com/Discussio ... 181ff08263
Perhaps it would solve the issue with FAH.

The program is really helpful for multi monitor setups since Windows 10 tends to shuffle program windows around pretty often.
Display Fusion offers a fast solution to restore a saved desktop layout with all windows positioned correctly.

Error is back again, so it was only coincidence with Display Fusion.
My suggestion is that this might be an access problem. The program still closes randomly and when i restart the program the UI is in basic look (screenshot in first post).
Is it possible that there are settings files still locked by the crashed program process so they can't be accessed?

I struggle to find other reports of such FAHControl crashes. Only one case, actually, after a problematic installation - have you already installed FAH before and then reinstalled it lately?
This software doesn't do much that can cause it to crash. It is essentially a GUI used to configure and monitor FAHClient through a telnet connection. You can even run FAH without it at all.

As is, the presence of Display Fusion (it is relatively deeply embedded in the system, even when not activated) seems to me to be the most probable cause. Among other things, it is associated with storing the way a window will look. Have you tried the beta?

Otherwise, other folders will perhaps have an idea?

Ok, i found out something interesting. Starting FAHControl via the taskbar symbol of Folding@home loads the window correctly. But i have also pinned FAHControl to my taskbar and when i start FAHControl via the pinned program icon i got the UI from the first post. So i assume that the start from the taskbar symbol of Folding@home is calling FAHControl with additional arguments or something else?

Some more testing: after unpinning and repinning of FAHControl.exe the program again correctly starts via the pinned program.
From this point i have to assume that this is some kind of strange Windows 10 error which leads to incorrect program start.

Might be. If you see the problem again, you may want to try and find it in the Event Viewer. You then could get some more precise clue about its cause.
