Best config CPU w/ 40 threads?

Post by zombie67 »

How to best to configure a machine with 40 threads? 32 is the max right? So what is the best way to do this? 20/20, 32/8, 16/16/8? Something else?

If you get work with 32/8, it will make the most points.
16/16/8 would always get work.

@JimboPalmer:
I remember a post from Joe_H stating that new projects use 12 threads as maximum:
"At the moment there are a number of CPU projects getting released with a maximum of 12 threads. There are other projects out that can use more, not sure of the current max."
viewtopic.php?f=61&t=33649#p320355

I don't know what the ratio is between projects that are able 16 or 12 threads.
Maybe setting 16/12/12 could be an option.
But someone more experienced should make a recommendation here.

My 24core and 32core slots are running 24/7 … there seem to be enough WUs for larger core machines … it may be best not splitting larger core slots down to multiple 12s unless really needed and leaving the 12core and less WUs for machines that can't do anything larger

@Neil-B:
Are the cores fully utilized then?
Just in case a let's say 16-thread projects runs on your 32-thread slot and therefore utilizes it only by 50%.

I have only once had this happen … the AS stepped my 32core slot down to 12 - wondered why it was taking its time until I spotted that … This is once in some 600+ WUs over the last month … but I may just have been lucky … I do run them with the client-type "advanced" flag set as I am happy that my kit is both stable and that the "risk" of running post-beta but pre-full release WUs is acceptable.

Just to clarify, that was at a point when there was a bit of a shortage of WUs that would run on a large number of threads. That situation has improved, some of the larger CPU projects have ramped up.

As for 32 being the max number of threads , that is on Windows machines. Linux and OS X can configure for more than 32.
