Installed new GPU, new GPU is having problems

I just installed a new GPU today to help with my FAH performance. (Woo!)

But the new GPU doesn't much like the FAH cores. Seems like it randomly reaches a bad state, then decides to shut down the core and upload a Bad_Work_Unit to the server.

Hypothesis: Old GPU was a GTX 970. New GPU is an RX 5600 XT. Architectural differences between NVidia and AMD are causing issues with the core and the configuration log for FAH hasn't detected the change when polling the server for appropriate work units (some work units don't like Navi or AMD for some reason based on my reading of the forums)

Proposed solution: Edit or recreate the configuration logs so FAH recognizes that I now have a Radeon Navi-based GPU.

Question: How to do this?

No manual OC, just running at factory stock settings (only installed the card a couple of hours ago)

GPU temperature in the Radeon software wasn't exceeding 70 C during the inspections I did. Reported wattage for the GPU under load was about 105 W, which is less than my 970 was drawing (about 125 W with a target of 75% power), so this is very unlikely to be a PSU issue either (I have a 500 W PSU which should be sufficient for my CPU + GPU)

CPU units are folding fine. All previous GPU units on the 970 were also fine.

The log message mentions something about detecting a 'single Nvidia GPU' when checking the core conditions though, which is why I think it's an issue with the configuration logs.

By far the simplest way to reset is to copy down your name, optionally your team, and optionally your passkey.

Now uninstall F@H including data and it will forget your config. (if you keep the data, it will not investigate your hardware)

Reinstall and reenter your personal info and life should be better. It seems the installer is much better at detecting hardware than the client is.

If you didn't use a driver cleaner utility to remove the nVidia drivers, this is the time to do that. You may also want to do a clean reinstall of the AMD drivers.

Is there a driver cleaner utility which is recommended? I just installed the AMD drivers earlier today, but I can uninstall those and reinstall if that may help.

Okay, I have used the DDU utility on all my gpu drivers and have reinstalled the AMD Radeon drivers. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the FAH 7.5.1 client as well and reentered my user name & passkey. The GPU immediately dumped the Work Unit as bad as soon as it got a new assignment after doing all of this.

The log is still including the message: "Requirements: single Nvidia GPU, tmax must be < 110 and twait >=900"

So somehow it is still detecting an Nvidia GPU and/or the server is giving me units I can't accept?

That line will always be printed out as it's part of the FahCore. Here's the argument when it's actually running the FahCore:

The first WU that was downloaded, just as it was about to be processed, the client settings changed which might have caused data corruption so the WU was lost :(

However, at the end of your log, there are no error messages so give it an hour or so and see what happens. Hopefully, it is working as expected :)

Could be a bad card or a bad factory overclock. Nan errors are usually bad calculations either from bad hardware or a bad overclock.

I am unfortunately still having problems. All throughout the night, I was getting "ERROR:exception: Error initializing context: clCreateCommandQueue (-6)" and the core wouldn't even start. Now I have a core that stalled at 99.99% with an ETA of unknown, but there doesn't seem to be any log files relating to the GPU unit now.

I've tried installing the drivers again, I've tried everything here, I haven't touched the factory settings (for everyone who is alleging this is an overclock issue), and I am still not able to fold a protein on this GPU despite all of this, and now I'm even getting a couple of BSOD's

At this point, I have yet to get a single successfully folded protein ever since installing this new GPU (on the GPU, CPU folds fine) and I am not sure where to go from here. I wish there was some more information about the problems and potential solutions. :cry:

That really sounds like a bum card. Have you tried any stress test or benchmarking software on it? Got another system you could try it in?

The stuck at 99% thing happens because fahcontrol/web control think its running and keep counting up but it actually crashed.
