I'm just a folder, like you (with 1 PC, now fully active), I was just guessing.
If the Next Attempt is hours away, you can pause for a minute and restart Folding. That will reinitialize the attempt interval and better your chances.

yes, I can do that during the day but like most people I need to sleep so last night I had PCs sitting idle once again as they couldn't get any work.ajm wrote:. That will reinitialize the attempt interval and better your chances.
Re: It's getting better now, isn't it?
I seem to be getting about 60% of what work I was getting for the past 3 months. I don't think the job queue is full yet.
20X more users takes a LOT more work units. Many of these new users produce 1+M points/day (while the average user production seems to be ~100K points/day) which also creates higher demand.

Re: It's getting better now, isn't it?
The timeouts between retries get longer and longer.
Trust me that all folders are suffering these common problems.
My personal contribution is down about 20 to 30 million points for March due to server issues.
But it is much better now.

One of mine is getting "empty workserver assignment" instead of the usual idle log message?

The workserver 128.252.203.9 is momentarily down: https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats

I guess that means FAH has really made the big leagues. We're so popular that the attacker decided to use our name and our COVAID campaign to spread his malware. (even if he used an extra T)

Re: It's getting better now, isn't it?
I woke up this morning, looked at my PC to find that my GPU slot had been waiting for over an hour for the server to give it a job, so I hit the pause-fold buttons to then find within a minute it was given a job.
I'm currently off work for another 1.5 weeks and kind of sat at my PC most of the day so I'm able to keep an eye on FAH to keep hitting the pause-fold buttons if the reset timer is longer than a couple of minutes.
When I go back to work I'm not going to be able to keep an eye on this, FAH will be entirely autonomous by itself when I'm away for most of my awake day... which currently I'm wondering should I just switch my PC off when I go to bed and save on the electricity cost because of my PC doing nothing or little for FAH because the servers can't handle the extra connections.

Re: It's getting better now, isn't it?
Please don't use pause/fold unless your retry time is more than 3 to 4 hours ... All you are doing is increasing the server request overload at the moment ... things are improving - but if everyone just uses this to increase the friendly fire ddos on the servers it just hampers this recovery ... please be patient

I know. But there should be a special place in Hell for those that obstruct the war on the Coronavirus. The last thing we need is for F@H to get a bad reputation. Every new member we lose, or doesn't join, is a loss to the virus. To make it worse, in Russia it's rare for the law to go after cyber crime.ajm wrote:Well, there's not much FAH can do. And, don't worry, if you're here, you have chosen the real one.
P.S. Some cyber criminals are targeting hospital computers, go figure!
Reality is what you stumble over when you walk around with your eyes closed.

Re: It's getting better now, isn't it?
Say your PC consumes 50 watts while idling and 250 watts when folding:SparkiTom wrote:I'm wondering should I just switch my PC off when I go to bed and save on the electricity cost because of my PC doing nothing or little for FAH because the servers can't handle the extra connections.
In the worst case scenario, your PC won't get any WUs during the night and idles the whole time, 0.05 kW * 8 hours --> 0.4 kWh.
Let's then assume that during the day (while awake and off work), you're able to manually pause/resume the client to get WUs and avoid any idle time. Your PC will now consume 0.25 kW * 16 hours --> 4.0 kWh. Daily total 4.4 kWh.
Had it been folding 24/7, it would be 6.0 kWh per day.
Since you want to fold 24/7 you are ready to pay for 6.0 kWh of electricity a day. Then why are you so concerned about being at 4.4 kWh a day instead of at 4.0 kWh a day?
